KB2871997 update failure

So Microsoft still needs to "fix" this update or at least provide some more detailed or useful information about what it's for and what things might cause the update to fail.

I agree. Unfortunately that takes time and users seeking help here need help now not in 2/3 months time.

Wouldn't it be sensible to clean install etc., all computers upon their return? You could run into all kinds of issues / problems if you do nothing to ensure that there is nothing on the computer like **** etc., when you loan it out again.

Same update issue here.  For me it comes with a second update from the same time period that also will not! install.   It is KB2922229    733kb

Microsoft should do their job for people who paid for their frakkin Windows.

At least fix the option that when i chose to ignore the update,  it wil not come back for 100!!!! times.

I have been emailed by Microsoft to ask whether this thread is still open. Well, yes it is but I have not been able to attend to it as my problems have escalated hugely!!

I was getting so many crashes, error codes etc that I decided to rebuild from scratch - Windows XP full edition & Windows 7 (64bit) upgrade.

I have now spent 3 days and started from the beginning 4 times in the rebuild as I fail at the last hurdle - installing Windows 7 SP1.

I must say that I have been disappointed by the Microsoft Support who will only really help if I pay $99 for a session.

This thread is not where I should air my feelings but Microsoft have lost my goodwill and I now consider Windows 7 "not fit for purpose"".

Paying so much for help!  ?  Just plain crazy.   They should not do that.

Well, it seems we are with a bunch of people here now that have the same problem. 

No, imo windows 7 is indeed not fit for duty.  I doubt windows 8 will be.  Viste, 7 and 8 are just recycled OS systems filled with flaws that need constant updates to balance its functions. 

But hey. What makes it all a bit less frustrating is the fact that you can easily make a dual boot with Lubuntu for example.     Those OS systems are better than microsoft ever made.

You are trying to install Windows 7 on a computer designed for Windows XP. Until the reason for failure is identified I am not sure that you are justified in blaming the Windows 7 software. Your difficulties could easily be down to out of date hardware or third party software. Let's see if we can obtain an answer and leave you as a happier bunny than you presently seem to be.

To troubleshoot most computer problems it helps to look at available clues in the System Information file and the Event Viewer logs. An experienced eye can pick out the needles in the haystack and see more clearly the precise nature of the problem or problems.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload to your OneDrive (formerly Sky Drive), share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your OneDrive and post a link here.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.
