Has anyone else been unable to install this update? I have tried 5 times without success. I have even tried by downloading directly from the Microsoft web site to no avail. Seems to be no mention of this failure on the M/s site.

I too am unable to install KB2871997 on just one computer. Have tried all the fixes: scan, Mr. Fix It, Clean Boot, etc. Error 80071A2D
Would like to mention, it seems to install just fine, asks for reboot, the on reboot there is a period shortly after startup where a series of number flow across the screen - something like updating 1 of 3,781, right after that point, it states the update failed.
Getting error 80073712 on updates KB 2964444 and KB 2871997. I've tried Mr Fixit, Method 1, 2 and 3 and still get this error. On Method 1 a log was created but I don't know how to get to it. It is Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
I didn't receive the actual software with the new computer so I can't follow instructions for this error provided by windows help. I do have a software mirror image and a system repair disk created right after I bought the computer. System repair disk doesn't fix the problem and I don't want to use the mirror image unless all else fails.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
I get the same exact problem. Over the past few days I tried SEVERAL clean boots, and allowing it to install. NEVER does and it keeps trying on its own. I've seen this a few times before with some updates. The only thing that I could do is ignore the update.
There needs to be more intelligence built into Windows Updates... when it fails twice Microsoft needs to get automatic alerts so they can see if there is a systemic problem - and fix it.

I'm on 2008 R2 Standard. twice I have had the progress bar go to the end and then the CPU goes to 100% and The Disk is pulsing for about 20 mins, then installation says "completed" and you must restart.
Twice I have had this install within 30 seconds no issues. Funny thing is there is no type of computer I have an issue with , meaning, the web server freaked once and then another web server installed no problem. Then a database server freaked and then another installed no problem.
(This is not as bad as the May release KB2926765 which does exactly the same thing, but never installs. I had to kill it. (I will post else where.)
KB2871997 failed for me as well. Error code 80070490
