KB2871997 update failure

Wow! I know this is almost a year late, but I thank you for your extensive knowledge and willingness to share it!

Having had what I thought was a problem with a recalcitrant update, and having run through all troubleshooting options and such, I finally looked up the offending kbs and tried manually downloading them. The first one popped a dialogue box to the effect that 'this update is not relevant to your computer'; the second kb was apparently already installed, though Windows Update keeps trying to resend it.....

First, I would like to say thank you to Susan Bradley who facilitated a contact with Microsoft technicians on this issue.

The problem PC is on a corporate network with updates pushed out by WSUS.  No other PCs on our network had a problem - all are running either OEM or volume license Windows 7 Pro SP1.  Different model PCs, but most have similar software.

We set up a session for Friday, June 13  Prior to the technician's call, I ran CCleaner on the PC to clean it up.  Also ran Scandisk which reported no errors.  The June updates had all failed along with KB2871997.  So once everything was cleaned up, I unchecked KB2871997 and installed the June updates with no problem.

By then, the technician called had me run sfc scannow and on review of the CBS log, there were a few "corruptions".  Then he set the system up for clean boot and he looked through the remaining services and disabled some.  On reboot, the computer had a hard crash - asked to go through system repair/restore, let it do it's thing and it came back on line after the restart.  Whew!  This was as far as I could go this session.  Note, I had not tried to reinstall KB2871997 yet again.

So we set up another session for the following Friday.  In the meantime he had sent me instructions on how to run sfc scannow on clean boot.  On Thursday a different technician called and when I took a quick look, here the update had installed on Monday when the user shut the computer off!  That was good news! 

Being curious, on Friday, I ran regular sfc scannow and in reviewing the CBS log, same corruptions were there.  So it wasn't the corruptions that held up the update.  For some reason, similar to another user's experience, once a new set of updates installed successfully, then then KB2871997 installed fine.

The Microsoft technicians were polite and ready to do what was needed to get to the bottom of the problem.  Luckily, time fixed this one.

As a side note, I will be looking into the corruption reported by SFC.  When reviewing the CBS logs I searched for the word "corrupt" and there were 5 entries, most reporting something wrong with some CHM help files, so I'm not too concerned about this.  Will get to it when time permits.

You are trying to install Windows 7 on a computer designed for Windows XP. Until the reason for failure is identified I am not sure that you are justified in blaming the Windows 7 software. Your difficulties could easily be down to out of date hardware or third party software. Let's see if we can obtain an answer and leave you as a happier bunny than you presently seem to be.

To troubleshoot most computer problems it helps to look at available clues in the System Information file and the Event Viewer logs. An experienced eye can pick out the needles in the haystack and see more clearly the precise nature of the problem or problems.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload to your OneDrive (formerly Sky Drive), share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your OneDrive and post a link here.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

Paying so much for help!  ?  Just plain crazy.   They should not do that.

Well, it seems we are with a bunch of people here now that have the same problem. 

No, imo windows 7 is indeed not fit for duty.  I doubt windows 8 will be.  Viste, 7 and 8 are just recycled OS systems filled with flaws that need constant updates to balance its functions. 

But hey. What makes it all a bit less frustrating is the fact that you can easily make a dual boot with Lubuntu for example.     Those OS systems are better than microsoft ever made.

I have been emailed by Microsoft to ask whether this thread is still open. Well, yes it is but I have not been able to attend to it as my problems have escalated hugely!!

I was getting so many crashes, error codes etc that I decided to rebuild from scratch - Windows XP full edition & Windows 7 (64bit) upgrade.

I have now spent 3 days and started from the beginning 4 times in the rebuild as I fail at the last hurdle - installing Windows 7 SP1.

I must say that I have been disappointed by the Microsoft Support who will only really help if I pay $99 for a session.

This thread is not where I should air my feelings but Microsoft have lost my goodwill and I now consider Windows 7 "not fit for purpose"".
