Updating from Windows 8 to 8.1 stuck at 82%

I am trying to update a computer for someone that is Windows 8.  I was able to download the update file, then I had to restart the computer for it to update.  Upon restarting it, it got to 82% and seems stuck there.  I have tried looking around and see that this is a common problem.  Are there any solutions to this?

I was experiencing the same problem updating on an Asus laptop. I unplugged the charger and it instantly started going up after being on 82% for an hour. It then continued all the way up to 100% and restarted.

If you have a laptop and are experiencing this problem, just try the above.

Hi Genevaflores,

To upgrade the operating system to Windows 8.1 without any issues, do the following steps and then check if the installation proceeds.

**Step 1:**Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard).

**Step 2:**If you are using any third-party antivirus software, you may uninstall it and check if you can upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Note: Even if you disable third party antivirus, Defender will still be running in the computer. This will guard your computer from malware and virus.

**Step 3:**Install all the available updates.

**Step 4:**Install the updated drivers for the hardware.

Step 5: Perform clean boot and then start the upgrade.

I also unplugged my power cord on my HP laptop and I can't believe it worked! It was stuck at 82% for an hour and a half!

I wonder what unplugging it does to jump start something because when I did I just heard a strong "whirr" sound of something starting up.

    Am upgrading an AMD Athlon x2 Neo, after reading your post and some of the others that mention the times it took them (actually some of the most useful information here) will leave it running overnight.

    Curious what your setup was. Compared to most CPUs now, the x2 Neo is rather slow, so 3 hours probably won't be enough. At least good to have some e.t.a.

    The only thing I can think of that MS could have improved here would have been to 'spread progress' better, making this part at 82% bigger. I mean, if the step from 82 to 83 was split into 78 to 88 it would have jumped a notch sooner.

    Ah...voila, as I'm writing this it jumped to 83, hallelujah!

    Hello !

    Recently I buyed a laptop,Asus is the brand,and i wanted to have no problems with it. I installed a version of windows 8.1 pro from torrent,it worked properly,but i had also the opportunity to have a license version of windows 8.1 professional from my university. 

    So...why not put the legal one? 

    I have downloaded it from that platform in a iso/img format,and i get it started in daemon tools.

    The installation started around 12:30 a.m. and it is stucked at 65% for more than two hours. 

    I tried to disconnect/reconnect the wireless device,but nothing...also i had tried to unplugged the charger and to use the arrow keys,also nothing...

    My patience still have a limit,but i don't want to cross it. 

    I will wait to see if God or maybe Bill Gates will have mercy for me and will give me a full and properly installation. 

    I will post in the morning if something was happened after i wrote this message over here.
