I am trying to update a computer for someone that is Windows 8. I was able to download the update file, then I had to restart the computer for it to update. Upon restarting it, it got to 82% and seems stuck there. I have tried looking around and see that this is a common problem. Are there any solutions to this?

I was experiencing the same problem updating on an Asus laptop. I unplugged the charger and it instantly started going up after being on 82% for an hour. It then continued all the way up to 100% and restarted.
If you have a laptop and are experiencing this problem, just try the above.

To upgrade the operating system to Windows 8.1 without any issues, do the following steps and then check if the installation proceeds.
**Step 1:**Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard).
**Step 2:**If you are using any third-party antivirus software, you may uninstall it and check if you can upgrade to Windows 8.1.
Note: Even if you disable third party antivirus, Defender will still be running in the computer. This will guard your computer from malware and virus.
**Step 3:**Install all the available updates.
**Step 4:**Install the updated drivers for the hardware.
Step 5: Perform clean boot and then start the upgrade.

I also unplugged my power cord on my HP laptop and I can't believe it worked! It was stuck at 82% for an hour and a half!
I wonder what unplugging it does to jump start something because when I did I just heard a strong "whirr" sound of something starting up.
I tried already twice to do the update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 because I cannot find any apps for Windows 8. It just stuck on 82% for an hour and I gave up and had to return to Windows 8. Besides it takes an hour to get from 0 to 82%.
Same thing but on a Dell Desktop. Definitely check the hard drive status. Mine never stopped blinking actively while it was stuck on 82% for about 20 minutes. Suddenly it jumps to 85%, and then it's done in less than 5 minutes to 100%.
It then reboot for me, the little spinning ring ran for about 2 minutes, then reboot again, then spun for a little before the "Getting devices ready XX%" showed up. That took about 3 minutes, without a hitch then displayed "Getting ready" for quite a while, maybe around 12 minutes. It then displayed "Applying PC settings XX%" which took about 1 minute to get to 50%, then another minute to get to 51%. Then it slowly increased in percentage after that for another 3 minutes before it got stuck at 79% for a minute, then increased to 88% and stayed there for about a minutes, then jumped to 90% then 100% and reboot again.
After it boot up, the wheel spun for about 30 seconds, hung for about a minute, then reboot. I got another spiining ring again and the display read "Setting up a few more things XX%" which went on very slowly. It went to 6% and stayed there for 3 minutes before going to 7%.. It went to 8%, then 11%,, and slowly continued for another 2 minutes to get to 40%. 2 minutes later it jumped up to 75%. After that it goes on for about 2 minutes before presenting "Getting ready."
Then it asked me to connect to a network and the rest is like buying a new computer.
Finally Hi shows up and the installing of new apps goes on for about 6 minutes and presented with a RunDLL Error. Wonderful....

So much for that. I'm going to make bootable media and just do a clean install....ugh. I've actually been through worse.
