I didn't particularly relish having to refresh my system either but having spent from Thursday to Sunday trying in vain to install Windows 8.1, the refresh was by far the quickest option, it was done and dusted within a few hours.

I had this problem upgrading from windows 8 to the preview and was never able to install it. Now I just try with the final and same problem is happening.
Microsoft is really disappointing me. This is ridiculous

2013-10-21T19:52:21+00:00 Having the same problem as everyone else. I think I've tried every suggestion on this thread so far. Unplugged all usb peripherals, clean boot, disabled defender and firewall, updated all drivers, finally did a clean install of Windows 8, installed the 63 updates and still no luck. I don't know what else to try.
Just for reference, I have a Fujitsu T5010 running windows 8 pro 32 bit. Intel core 2 duo p8700 with 4gigs of ram

2013-10-21T19:59:45+00:00 When I did the refresh I purposely only installed the one update required to ensure that the Win 8.1 upgrade is visible in the Store - KB2871389. I was concerned that it was one of the 60 - 70 other updates which was causing it to fail. With just that one update installed it worked first time.
