Did you upgrade from a previous version of Windows to Windows 8 then try the update?

What steps you took before the upgrade - (reinstall Windows, reset Windows, etc)

Any errors encountered before attempting to update to Windows 8.1?

In my case, I've got an Asus X50VL.

 

I did a clean install of windows 8 then, I disabled all the devices I could. But the result was error 0xC1900101-0x20017

If you haven't already and are still running Windows Vista, I suggest

Unplug all peripheral devices

Reinstall Windows Vista

Proceed with Windows Updates

Proceed with Read Before Upgrade information listed above

This PC is running Windows 8 for a year with no problems. I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 then to Windows 8 without any difficulty.

When I had problems to upgrade to Windows 8.1, I format the hard drive and reinstall Windows 8 with my original DVD. But I've always got the error 0xC1900101-0x20017.

Unfortunately your suggestion came a bit too late for me but maybe it can help others...

My OS had been 'rock' stable but I wanted to take advantage of some of the new features in the update.

What started innocently enough with (in my case) with the Win8 Pro-64 to Win8.1 Pro-64 update turned 'ugly' and very, very frustrating.

After six failed attempts to update at the Windows store, it was suggested I remove all of the Intel stuff (drivers, disk management etc...), along with my Avast antivirus and Daemon tools.

The first reboot went as planned (normal start).

The next attempt to update did not.

I got a screen stating that the OS install was not successful and a rollback was being initiated.

The next restart was followed by a bluescreen "no bootable drive found" message....and so the loop began.

It would not auto repair, system restore or any such thing...except command prompt.

The bootrec /fixMBR, fixboot, or rebuildBCD commands did nothing.

Attempts to boot from the Win8-64 Pro DVD created from an ISO would return a fail verification at key insertion...despite it being correct.

Unplugging all other drives except the boot drive to attempt USB recovery would result in the drive being blocked by Windows Resources Protect at the command prompt.

Three separate remote assistance sessions with Microsoft Tech support yielded no fix.

They were even more frustrated than I was.

In the end the only option was to physically reinstall my Window7 drive as the boot drive...followed by a format of the Windows 8 drive.

Four days of frustration for what should have been twenty-five minutes at most.

While it's clear that the OS... once running properly is very stable, the troubleshooting beyond what is considered normal leaves a lot to be desired.

This is meant to be an update to a current operating system, not a new standalone windows version. It absolutely should not involve procedures such as totally re-installing windows 8 etc. especially when this is still only a shot in the dark and may (probably will) not succeed.

The process of updating should normally be essentially transparent to the end user.

This is not the case for a significant number of previously fully functioning systems. The individuals coming to seek help here probably represent the tip of an iceberg of users who have failed to make the transition to 8.1.

At present there are multiple suggested strategies out there, none of which are routinely proven to work. In a few cases, Microsoft has been able to confirm a specific cause e.g. Steelseries drivers and some individuals have (mainly by luck) stumbled upon a solution that works, at least in part, for them.

Individuals have submitted logs, as you suggest above, with no sign that this has led to a resolution of their issue. They may well have also used the automated utility to supply information to Microsoft, as requested by Nirmal S in their post of 7th November.

The lack of any official update or recent input from Microsoft is disappointing. It is to be hoped that they are working on an update/s to correct the failures of the 8.1 install but there is no information forthcoming from them.  It would be appreciated if there was a "sticky" official thread somewhere.

Meantime, the best strategy for most is probably to stick with 8 until an 8.1 update is delivered, rather than risk trashing or crippling your system by one of the multiple unproven/tested suggested pathways to be found in this and other similar threads.
