Windows 8.1 install - unable to create ramdisk - 0xc1900101-0x20017

When I attempt to install Windows 8.1 on my machine from the Windows Store, on boot I receive a blue screen. The error message indicates that the system was unable to create a ramdisk and shows error number 0xc1900101.

On reboot, it restores my original installation and provides the following error code: 0xc1900101-0x20017.

In reading some other topics, it seems drivers may need to be updated, but as far as I know I am up-to-date. Is there a way to identify which driver had a failure?

Also, on other threads with this code, I see no mention of a "ramdisk". Is that a unique problem?

Edit: Let me note my system has no ramdisk software installed whatsoever.

    I am experiencing the same problem and thought I would share some new findings. Not a fix per say but maybe it will be helpful in finding a solution.

    On a different forum one person reported that he was able to fix the issue by doing a "refresh" on his PC before attempting the upgrade: (http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/33447-windows-8-1-update-success-ramdisk-error.html)

    I tried the same method but ran into the "Unable to create ramdisk ..." error when I tried to refresh my PC. The difference this time was that I did not have the option to restore to windows 8 since I wasn't performing an upgrade (only a refresh). I was able to get back to windows 8 by doing a hard reset on my computer.

    Anyway, I wonder if this is something that is broken in windows 8 for everyone that is experiencing these upgrade problems. If it is, then perhaps it is not the upgrade but some of other software component in windows 8 that is causing the issue.

    nope, that was more of a rant than an idea filled post!

    I am out of ideas...i have updated everything i could, to no avail.

    i have been searching other forums...nothing...

    i think ms is great, so i won't be the one bashing them...

    just seems to me this thread isnt getting any attention...

    Tried this process too and failed... Trying a fresh install next... This is so lame. This is just supposed to be an incremental update... why i it so complicated. I've had 4 Microsoft techs take a look at it so far too and none of them can pull it off. 

    I have another "higher level" Microsoft Tech calling me tomorrow to give it a shot, so we'll see.... Ugh.

    This worked for me except I had to choose a new install rather than an upgrade install and I ran the installation from the USB stick. The upgrade install did not work. I have an nVidia 790 Ultra SLI motherboard.

    Seems like only first posts in the thread  are answered by microsft staff on this forum. Most of them are generic as I have discovered reading many of them. "Check your antivirus, third party software blah, blah. Check your Pm" and so on.

    I'm afraid no one is investigating problem seriously. Been through this myself before: 780SLI chipset on asus deluxe board - problems with ever present blue screens, six or seven versions of bios, no support from asus (finally had to swap for evga). You have to see to believe how much hate can be poured on asus on what is basically official asus support forum :)

    Then no support for midi/game port on creative audigy. Microsoft said its creative drivers, creative... well, didn't say much  (left as is although windows keeps nagging me about unresolved problem).

    Question is where to go. Have you got any ideas? I don't want to and don't have time to go to every hardware forum on the net crying about how bad microsoft is. And on most of them you would meet folks claiming they have resolved this issue by touching their left toe while keeping the power button on and scratching their empty memory banks or erase everything and start from the point blank.
