Windows 8.1 install - unable to create ramdisk - 0xc1900101-0x20017

I too have similar problem.

Here after the first restart following installation of Windows 8.1 from windows store a Blue screen appears with an error message 'PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA'. Following this the laptop reboots automatically and finally a message pops up saying Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 with the error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017.

I have a Toshiba Laptop and 

I have been running Windows 8 Pro for months now. There is lot of data on C Drive and more than 110 softwares installed of which most of them are used daily.

All these years updates have been sent through windows update and that used to get installed fairly well. Now this is the first time i am having trouble installing a major update from microsoft and right  now i am totally disappointed. That too something which is downloaded from so called Windows Store should help people rather than creating more confusion and trouble to rest of the people. I have wasted lot of time and bandwidth downloading this update and finally did noting after repeated trials....Why do MS release such updates with out proper testing for compatibility. Its quite obvious that Majority of the people would have some or at times many non-compatible softwares or hardwares in their PC/Laptop,  and why does MS even try to provide easier alternative methods for updation....??! I am surprised.....

Now if someone advice me to do a clean install/boot, i dont have any choice than to delete all my work done so far with those softwares i already have....even though data can be backed up.....thats a waste of time for all of us....

So is there any way to install the update without removing softwares or data from C Drive....??! There is a temporary folder with Windows 8.1 installation files in C drive....i tried installing from there manually, but it is not recognizing my Windows 8 Pro serial and is asking me to type a new windows 8.1 serial......

Plz help if u could any alternate methods of installing the update........

I tried all those methods, but unfortunately installation showed the same error with blue screen. 

So i had to refresh the PC with my genuine windows 8 dvd keeping all personal files and then i juz installed/updated with genuine windows 8.1 pro iso image on dvd which i had already downloaded. Installed with a general 8.1 serial from internet and then finally activated with my genuine windows 8 pro serial once the pc connected to the internet. Reinstalled all my softwares once again and right now its working fine.

I hope Microsoft would release future updates which are much more easier to install and cause less trouble to atleast those people who use a genuine windows software when pirated ones are freely available in the internet to install. And i think one to one customer care support is a must when people pay for such softwares.

I just reformatted and reinstalled Windows 8 then I checked for updates and installed them, (there were 70) Then I did the 8.1 update and it installed the only thing is it didn't install my SB Recon3D Champion Sound Card correctly, To get it to work I had to go into Device Manager and delete it, then I had device manager check for new hardware and it installed the Windows generic driver which worked but I downloaded the new Sound Blaster drivers for Win 8/8.1 and installed them and so far everything is working fine . Hope this helps...

Need to run the boot disk on startup (but we are able to keep our files).

I'm french so i needed then to install french language pack after. I then get problems with native apps of win8.1 in their french version (calendar/mail/etc).

If someone have such troubles, you must remove all English apps, reinstall the french ones and restart your computer (otherwise, the app won't have any shortcut in the computer).

BTW : Q6600 and Nvidia mothercard, i think some drivers from W8.0 causes troubles (and no spyware or something else as i could read, my computer was totally clean).

I was having this same error 0xc1900101-0x20017 with my teen's computer.  A nVidia 680i mobo with the first Intel quad-core chip.  I mention teen since he likes to download risky software.  A good sign of an infected computer is you have various toolbars installed on your system.

I was having some issues with System File Checker (sfc) but got those cleared up.  I uninstalled stuff and ran Defender scans and CCleaner several times.  The system apeeared to be working well and seemed to be virus free but no luck installing W8.1 without same ramdisk error reoccurring.

Solution:  I installed W8 clean from DVD.  Did the Media Center update, and then did the W8.1 update.  I had absolutely no issues with the updates.  The ramdisk error never happened again.

Moral of the story, I had remnants of a virus or malware somewhere that was affecting the update to W8.1.  It wasn't drivers or anything else I found people suggesting to try on various web sites.  You can't really blame your infected computer on Microsoft when you, or someone else using your computer, gives the malware or virus permission to install itself.  In my case, it looks like Microsoft is off the hook since I had an infected computer preventing the W8.1 update from happening.
