Although I have my computer set to notify me when there are updates before I install them, my computer automatically updated
Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320. Do I need this update and why did it load into my computer before I selected. I have searched for some explanation as to what this program is but am unable to find anything. WHAT IS IT?

Are you saying that a regular click to run update occurred around the same time as the WU update, and that the reason the system restore "fixed" the problem is because the click to run update was rolled back too?
Will click to run continue to update if WU is disabled?
FYI - The "repair install" (the Online Repair option in Uninstall or Change a Program) didn't run after the WU update (or the click to run update), and only did run after the system restore.
Yes, it was the Defense+ portion of the Comodo firewall that reported the attempt to modify a log and the registry.
Virustotal.com didn't quite say it was safe. What it actually said was, "Probably harmless! There are strong indicators suggesting that this file is safe to use." And on the additional information tab under Advanced heuristic and reputation engines it said, "Symantec reputation Suspicious.Insight" which linked to: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2010-021223-0550-99
The Symantec writeup says in part: "The Suspicious.Insight detection, therefore, is meant to inform the user that a given application is unproven and not yet well known to Symantec’s tens of millions of users."
I'm 99.9% convinced from replies in this thread and links to Microsoft announcements that it is a legitimate update. But it is weird that both Comodo and Symantec still flagged it as suspicious and not widely known or trusted when it had been rolling out for over a month.
It doesn't help that anyone looking for possible explanations finds references to the Flame virus and realizes the first signs of a new variant of the Flame virus might be similar. Seems like better communication between Microsoft and security software vendors would be helpful.
This update to Windows Update was announced in June.

Look for a line like that where the wu plumbing checks for an update.
Historically they dribble this update out, and as Pabear has said, they look like they are turning on the faucet.
Office 365 has been unfortunately barfing a lot lately with it's click to run deployments. You just rolled your click to run deployment back is all. Unfortunately with click to run the only solution is a repair install.
But click to run doesn't use the WU update engine.
