Although I have my computer set to notify me when there are updates before I install them, my computer automatically updated

Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320. Do I need this update and why did it load into my computer before I selected. I have searched for some explanation as to what this program is but am unable to find anything. WHAT IS IT?

I run a MacBook, a Chromebook and an Ubuntu.  Believe me, I know there are alternatives.  And in all four platforms, I still have to have a fundamental trust of the base operating system.  All of these platforms update.

Like I said if you really think that any updating process is inserting a NSA back door, then stop using the operating system you are concerned about.

"trust me because i say so" is something one tells to kids

"trust microsoft regardless of established PRISM program to steal your private data" is something one tells to retards

most people using microsoft product are either careless or don't have much of a choice, I'm part of the later, I still have plans to neutralize microsoft malicious behavior as much as possible, I'll probably have windows sandboxed without an internet access sooner or later

If you don't trust this update, then you don't trust this operating system at all and you shouldn't be running windows.  I'm sorry to be blunt folks but if you don't trust this process, then stop using Windows.

That's actually a great suggestion, and I mean it.

If you really still believe a world without MS windows is inconceivable, you should think again and take a closer look at the reality.

    1. it's not a shady update.  It's how Windows update ensures that when it does need to work it works.

    2.   As per the eula, unless you completely disable updates, if you have updates set to detect and not deploy this "plumbing" update will occur automatically.

    This is normal expected behavior.

Folks there are times to be paranoid and times to not be paranoid.

This IS NOT A TIME TO BE PARANOID.  This is your operating system DOING WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO.  Keep working.

Can we all just step back, calm down, understand that just like oil and gas in a car that has to be in the engine for it to work, these plumbing updates are needed to make your computer work.  You have to have them.

If you don't trust this update, then you don't trust this operating system at all and you shouldn't be running windows.  I'm sorry to be blunt folks but if you don't trust this process, then stop using Windows.

I think that's the cause for concern. According to our comments here, bourneyg, five cents and I all had windows update set to notify us first, yet windows update agent 7.6.7600.320 automatically downloaded and installed without any notification. It seems to be a legit update but I think we all want to know why it automatically downloaded and installed, despite our having windows update configured to notify us before doing so. Something like that is suspicious behavior.

legit ? the meaning of that word should be highly questioned after the snowden's leaks

another update to comply with a National Security letter? adding more backdoors for the NSA?

I personally will not take any chance with this shady update, I have windows update permanently filtered in firewall
