Although I have my computer set to notify me when there are updates before I install them, my computer automatically updated

Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320. Do I need this update and why did it load into my computer before I selected. I have searched for some explanation as to what this program is but am unable to find anything. WHAT IS IT?

what is wrong with all you stupid idiots? THE QUESTION IS NOT WHY DID 7.6.7600.320 UPDATE BUT WHY IN **** IS THIS UPDATE STOPPING ALL OTHER UPDATES FROM UPDATING. IF YOU HAD EARLIER VERSION OF UPDATE 7.6.7600.256 THEN UPDATE WOULD STOP WORKING UNTILL YOU UPDATED TO 7.6.7600.320 NO MATTER WHAT YOUR SETTINGS WERE, MANUAL OR AUTOMATIC. NOW THE PROBLEM IS AFTER THE UPDATE 7.6.7600.320 WILL NOT LET ANYMORE UPDATING IT JUST HANGS FOR HOURS AND HOURS WITHOUT UPDATING. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A VIRUS PUT OUT BY MICROSOFT IN ORDER TO MAKE PEOPLE BUY THE UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10 FOR $140.00 US. BECAUSE THE  UPDATE 7.6.7600.320 EVEN PREVENTS FROM UPGRADING TO FREE VERSION OF WINDOWS 10 UNLESS YOU ALREADY HAVE IT RESERVED

This is a deliberate act of sabotage by Microsoft to get people to buy windows 10. only 1 month left for free upgrade now everyone will scramble to try to upgrade for free but this windows update agent 7.6.7600.320 will not let any updates happen.

You're a few years late in your reply.

WU works fine here on Win7 x64 SP1 Pro with the latest WU client

      7.6.7601.23453

    Included in:

     https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608

Win10 upgraded fine - as well as restoring the pre-Win10 image created of Win7.  Repeated upgrade to Win10  using Win10 Media Creation Tool then followed with a clean install of Win10 then restore again back to Win7 via the Win7 image noted above - WU 7.67601.23453 still working.

Horse-hockey! Win10 wasn't even in beta preview when the OP started this thread on 01 August 2014.

I even tried to upgrade to 10 manually bet it hangs up at 99% and wont upgrade. some other updates can still be done manually. the latest updater that worked was 7.6.7600.256. this is for windows 7 home premium. If you can find an update higher than 320 you might get it working again. I think toe only higher updaters are in win 8 or 10.
