Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320

Same thing on two computers - home & office. "Do not download or install" is set, but update installed anyway. After update, Office 365 error messages appeared. (FYI - I use Office 365 Small Business Premium on both computers). Had to restore to point before installation.

There is no need or requirement to inform per the Windows 7 EULA.  They do have the right to additional notification (media, blog, KB article) but not necessary or mandatory. It's nice when they do inform that something is coming down the pike but in this case not required.

The Windows 7 EULA clearly states that updates for the Window Update service can be deployed without notification.

Windows Update. To enable the proper functioning of the Windows Update service in the software (if you use it), updates or downloads to the Windows Update service will be required from time to time and downloaded and installed without further notice to you.

i.e. in the above licensing statement:

1. 'the software (if you use it)' = Windows 7

2. ' **updates or downloads to the Windows Update service will be required from time to time'*=***updating the Windows Update engine whenever required (The agent in the subject of this thread)

3. **downloaded and installed without further notice to you =**without notification and agreed upon by anyone using Windows.

The EULA file (license.rtf) can be found on the pc in a subfolder under the Windows directory.

 C:\Windows\System32\en-US\Licenses

The EULA is also accepted when installing Windows or upon first use (e.g Windows is user installed or pre-installed by an OEM or System Builder).

It's slowly being pushed out to all users.  It's entirely possible that your system didn't get the wu update at this time because you didn't let it sit there long enough.

You didn't have WU disabled.  You had it set to be active - even with

"download but do not install" the plumbing of the engine will be updated.  It's exactly like antivirus def updates, it's expected that these are automatic.  What is the real issue is how Comodo reacted to this change.

It's not suspicious, it's expected behavior.

Granted it may not be what you expect, but it's definitely designed to work exactly like this.

I have Windows Update turned off by default...I checked Windows Update the other day and the update to the WU engine is not listed as being available or installed at this time

If Automatic Updates is turned off (i.e., set to the Never check for updates option), Windows Update Agent wouldn't be updated.

Judging by related posts in these forums and by my own Win7 box's Update History, [1] it would appear that the Windows Update Client upgrade started being rolled out circa 04:00 UTC on Saturday, 02 August 2014.

It may take a week or more for the "infrastucture" update to be rolled out to a given computer.

...there are some reports of this version of the WU engine being installed as early as June of this year.

KB2887535 (Update to Microsoft Update client) was released on 23 June 2014 and the corresponding Announcement (same date) doesn't mention a release date. That being said...

KB949104 (How to update the Windows Update Agent to the latest version) has displayed the "latest version of the Windows Update Agent for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP is 7.6.7600.256" since 23 May 2014.
