Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG - wireless adapter occasionally loses connection (Windows 8.1)

Hello,

I have an ASUS S451LB laptop.

Running Windows 8.1.

Using Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter.

I have an extremely annoying problem lately - I am surfing the web, connected to my home network through WiFi, and every now and then (approximately once an hour or so) my network connection fails. The network notification doesn't show an exclamation mark or anything, everything seems fine but a connection would not be established and I would not be able to use the internet for about 1-3 minutes. Sometimes the problem would fix itself and my connection would renew, and sometimes I rather not wait and when I open the troubleshooting program it resets my WiFi adapter and reconnects to my home network and everything is normal again.

I have two other laptops connected to my home network (Both HP laptops, one is on win7, the other is 8.1) that do not suffer from this odd wireless behavior. Same goes for my android devices, they never fail the connection to my home network. In addition to that I've also connected to my router directly using cable connection for a few days, and never suffered these connection disturbances. Therefore I presume the problem lies within my ASUS laptop's WiFi adapter.

Yesterday I've tried reinstalling the drivers version 10.0.0.263 (currently the latest), also reinstalled the whole Qualcomm bluetooth connection suite as well and problem still persists.

If anyone could shed some light and help me fix this horrible WiFi adapter issues I'd fly over and buy him a beer personally!!

I would suggest you to clean install the drivers by uninstalling the drivers from device manager and reinstalling it and check if it helps:

Download drivers from this Asus link:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name.
Click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall drivers and follow the instructions.
Restart the computer install the downloaded drivers and check.

Follow the suggestion from this link. These steps can help if you can’t connect to Wi-Fi, you have limited connectivity, your connection signal is weak or drops intermittently, or you can’t find a network.

The very same thing happens to me

i have windows 7 installed

tried everything!!

just tried adjusting the power settings and changing WPA setting

Its very odd....on some routers it works perfectly on others I get the limited connection every 15mins.

I too am frustrated as to why this suddenly began happening on my ASUS K55N laptop. Happened with 2 different routers. I also experienced the same issues, except mine would happen regardless of power source. Here is what I just did...

I installed driver version .270. Then I checked Windows update and there were (2) optional updates. One of them was an update to the Atheros Bluetooth Controller and the other was an MS update rollup http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919394. A restart was required. Not sure it was one of these or a combination of 2 or all 3 of them, but my connection has remained stable and has not dropped in the 2+ hours since.

Well.. The current status is that since I uninstalled by the setup the driver, removed the installed driver in the device manager too for the Wifi, rebooted, installed the .279(got it from the Asus Support), but even that this alone didn't helped itself, I also had some updates from MS(they came some days later after I got the driver and around one week from now back) and since installed them, since the 07.02.2014 I haven't drops anymore.. Don't want to paint the devil on the wall, but till now no drops. anymore.. I think for Fyreman907, you could have a hardware fault or just driver fault as the win7 driver for the AR9485 are even there not very know for "stability"... I think that for most user there is a special mixture of driver fault and OS shits..

This problem is not because of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. The problem lies within the network adapter itself. I am having the exact same problem on a Windows 7 machine and have done all of the device driver and reinstall methods listed above. I have also tried the power saving settings and still no solution. However, I will say that the problem did not exist until there was some Microsoft updates, so there could be a problem within Microsoft's programming, but it is not because of 8.1 alone as some have made it sound. A fix needs to be found as this same network adapter is used in many devices and causing a great deal of people problems.
