Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG - wireless adapter occasionally loses connection (Windows 8.1)

Hello,

I have an ASUS S451LB laptop.

Running Windows 8.1.

Using Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter.

I have an extremely annoying problem lately - I am surfing the web, connected to my home network through WiFi, and every now and then (approximately once an hour or so) my network connection fails. The network notification doesn't show an exclamation mark or anything, everything seems fine but a connection would not be established and I would not be able to use the internet for about 1-3 minutes. Sometimes the problem would fix itself and my connection would renew, and sometimes I rather not wait and when I open the troubleshooting program it resets my WiFi adapter and reconnects to my home network and everything is normal again.

I have two other laptops connected to my home network (Both HP laptops, one is on win7, the other is 8.1) that do not suffer from this odd wireless behavior. Same goes for my android devices, they never fail the connection to my home network. In addition to that I've also connected to my router directly using cable connection for a few days, and never suffered these connection disturbances. Therefore I presume the problem lies within my ASUS laptop's WiFi adapter.

Yesterday I've tried reinstalling the drivers version 10.0.0.263 (currently the latest), also reinstalled the whole Qualcomm bluetooth connection suite as well and problem still persists.

If anyone could shed some light and help me fix this horrible WiFi adapter issues I'd fly over and buy him a beer personally!!

Hi Sinvany,

I would suggest you to clean install the drivers by uninstalling the drivers from device manager and reinstalling it and check if it helps:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

  1. Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name.
  3. Click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall drivers and follow the instructions.
  4. Restart the computer install the downloaded drivers and check.

Follow the suggestion from this link. These steps can help if you can’t connect to Wi-Fi, you have limited connectivity, your connection signal is weak or drops intermittently, or you can’t find a network.

    I have bought a Asus Vivobook S400CA-CA202H with the qualcomm atheros ar9485wb-eg and Windows 8 and i also had very low WiFi speed and numerous disconnects.

    Other devices on my WLAN are working properly.

    After seeking for 2 weeks for a solution i tried just about everything: other drivers, remove antivirus, other firmware/settings (encryption, MTU, enz.)router,

    reinstall OS, firewall settings, IP settings, power saving settings of the adapter. You name it.

    But this was the solution for me!!

    I noticed that the Asus Power4Gear Hybrid has i mind of it's own and constantly adjusted the performance settings.

    I removed Asus Power4Gear Hybrid and set the Windows 8 power scheme to high performance.

    I also configured the schema advanced settings for the wireless connection (maximum performance) and PCI express (disable).

    You are talking about Windows 8.0 pure and this is a 8.1 AR9485 issues forum.. In 8.0 there are some issues which can be solved by driver updates and so on, but in 8.1 there are some hidden issues.

    I already did this, but I imported added the .278 driver. It is still stable and good download rate, but it drops me anyway from time to time. I can't exactly say when, because I leaved the connection to the wifi connected and gamed a few hours. Once i checked the event viewer, i saw the Event 8002 with the disconnects und the WLAN Autoconfig.

    I was having the exact same problem with an AR9485WB-EG chip on Windows 8.1. Tried all things suggested in this topic with regards to drivers and driver / power saving settings.

    Read on a Dutch forum that some people seemed to be able to fix the issue by removing the device from Device Manager:

    • BEWARE: After completing the steps below, your saved wireless network credentials will be deleted, and therefore you will have to enter the password again when you connect to any network.
    • Open Device Manager
    • Right click the AR9485WB-EG card and choose Properties
    • Open the "Driver" tab (I'm not sure if "Driver" is the correct translation, I am using a Dutch version of Windows)
    • Click "Delete" or "Remove" (the last button on the screen)
    • In the next screen make sure the checkbox is enabled and proceed by clicking OK
    • Reboot.
    • Windows will now automatically install the default driver (in my case version 10.0.0.260, released on 7-15-2013)

    I executed these steps just 15 minutes ago so I cannot say if they worked for me. However, previously I was almost constantly suffering from slow speeds (online speedtests reported reasonable results, yet web pages were loading very slowly and the connection was dropping regularly). Now it seems to be working fine, but I will have to wait it out in order to confirm if it really worked. I will try to let you know in a day or two if it proves to be a definitive solution or not...

    I am suffering with my Asus G750JX from the same(even with the .278 driver).. It is an amazing laptop and combined with the SSD Samsug EVO 840 Pro a pure rage.. except the wifi.. thinking about a external device.. but what a ****.. It drops me like in the first article.. sometimes the entire day nothing, but on the other several times within one hour. Purchase a 1500 Euro laptop with buildin Wifi 802.11n adapter and need to purchase ADDITIONALLY a different USB based network stick..? And what is if there is the same? the cisco AE1200 is ok, but so damn long. the Dlink is quite small, but nobody can say if that specific what i think is supported as there are 2 of that.. what a ****... what a mystery.. get it solved MS.. or get in touch with ASUS.. so far the ASUS support is coming like MS.. come on.. I am working for the competitors and I am ver disappointed.. I am wondering how the customers can lie so much to us if I get sick of the default answers from MS and ASUS....
