I've been having an issue updating my copy of Windows 8.1. I went into Windows Update and noticed that it hadn't checked for updates since November 1st. Every time I run Windows Update, either on the desktop or tiled interface, it gives a 80244FFF error. It is able to download and install Windows Defender definition updates. I've tried turning off Windows Defender and firewall, plugging my PC directly into the cable modem, trying Safe Mode (Which doesn't allow Windows Update to run), scanning all my drives for errors, and disconnecting all my hard drives except the boot drive but nothing has worked. I don't want to "Refresh" my copy of Windows 8.1 given that I have many desktop applications and don't want to reinstall manually.
I did find a workaround, of sorts, using WSUS Offline, but I'm wanting the normal Windows Update process to work as intended. Below is my log from the Windows directory showing what has been happening. I'm surprised that there are no Action Center items saying Windows Update isn't working. Is there a way to get Windows Update running as it should?

Hi Mika,
Thanks for posting the screenshot.
Finnish does make it a little more difficult I must admit, but Google translate came to my aid and translated "Windows ei voinut hakea uusia päivityksiä" into "Windows could not search for new updates" which is rather what I expected to see.
I'm wondering if the problem is related to a faulty hard drive because I note you already reinstalled Windows without fixing the problem.
I suggest you run a diags check on the hard disk by doing the following.
You'll get a message that a diags check can't be performed because the disk cannot be locked and whether you want to schedule a check on the next reboot. Click "Yes" and then either reboot immediately, or finish what you're doing and then restart.
Chkdsk will check the drive for bad sectors and mark any found so that they can't be used. It will also check for file system errors and attempt to correct them.
I should warn you that a diags check can take several hours depending on the hard drive capacity and how much corruption is found. If it appears to hang at a certain percentage for a long time i.e. 1-2 hours, then it's likely that your hard drive is defective and will need to be replaced.
I suggest you run a diags check on the hard disk by doing the following.
- Right click the Start button and go to "Command Prompt (Admin)".
- Type (or copy/paste) CHKDSK /f /r and hit Enter.

Do we know if this is an SSD? I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't do things like this to an SSD.

Hi Robert,
That is indeed a noteworthy point, but the hard disk controller on an SSD would mark bad sectors automatically. Chkdisk /f is all that would be necessary in that particular case.
But Mika mentioned reinstalling the OS on May 3, but still gets the error, so I'm assuming it's a standard rotary HD.

I am using an SSD, but chkdsk itself does not cause any harm to the drive. Defragging is counterproductive on an SSD, though. Because each cell can be read as quickly as the next one, there is no point in reorganizing data, so it would only add unnecessarily reduce the amount of times each cell could be written. Any modern Windows will flat-out refuse to defrag an SSD, though.
I did not run a bad sector check, because the SMART information displayed by CrystalDiskInfo does not report any issues (including bad sectors).
But chkdsk did not find any logical issues, either:
