Windows Update Error (80244FFF)

I've been having an issue updating my copy of Windows 8.1.  I went into Windows Update and noticed that it hadn't checked for updates since November 1st.  Every time I run Windows Update, either on the desktop or tiled interface, it gives a 80244FFF error.  It is able to download and install Windows Defender definition updates.  I've tried turning off Windows Defender and firewall, plugging my PC directly into the cable modem, trying Safe Mode (Which doesn't allow Windows Update to run), scanning all my drives for errors, and disconnecting all my hard drives except the boot drive but nothing has worked.  I don't want to "Refresh" my copy of Windows 8.1 given that I have many desktop applications and don't want to reinstall manually.

I did find a workaround, of sorts, using WSUS Offline, but I'm wanting the normal Windows Update process to work as intended.  Below is my log from the Windows directory showing what has been happening.  I'm surprised that there are no Action Center items saying Windows Update isn't working.  Is there a way to get Windows Update running as it should?

Unfortunately reinstalling the Update manually did not help. I still get error 80240442.

I'm currently taking a look at Process Monitor, but filtering the log to something browseable is going to take a while.

    Hi Mika,

Thanks for posting all that info.

Perhaps you could try installing the Update manually from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

This is the reissued version which appeared yesterday. Make a note of the "Details" link and "Install Instructions" before you begin though.

This new release is supposed to address the installation failures many users have been experiencing. See this article for more info: http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-reissues-botched-windows-81-update-kb-2919355-241891

I suggest you run a diags check on the hard disk by doing the following.

Right click the Start button and go to "Command Prompt (Admin)".

Type (or copy/paste) CHKDSK /f /r and hit Enter.

Do we know if this is an SSD?  I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't do things like this to an SSD.

I am using an SSD, but chkdsk itself does not cause any harm to the drive. Defragging is counterproductive on an SSD, though. Because each cell can be read as quickly as the next one, there is no point in reorganizing data, so it would only add unnecessarily reduce the amount of times each cell could be written. Any modern Windows will flat-out refuse to defrag an SSD, though.

I did not run a bad sector check, because the SMART information displayed by CrystalDiskInfo does not report any issues (including bad sectors).

But chkdsk did not find any logical issues, either:

    Hi Robert,

That is indeed a noteworthy point, but the hard disk controller on an SSD would mark bad sectors automatically. Chkdisk /f is all that would be necessary in that particular case.

But Mika mentioned reinstalling the OS on May 3, but still gets the error, so I'm assuming it's a standard rotary HD.
