Windows 8 / 8.1 - Num Lock on startup screen

Hi,

When I start up my pc and get to the screen where I need to enter my password, sometimes the NumLock key is activated, sometimes it isn't. This is really random.

I have the same problem on 2 different pc's, one win 8 and the other win 8.1

I think I found a solution that works permanently:

It is also a change in the register but not the one I have read in most posts.

  • You go to the register
  • Open HKEY USERS
  • Open Default
  • Open Control Panel
  • Click on Keyboard
  • On the right side you get 4 keyboard items
  • InitialKeyboardIndicators has a number as data > 2147483648
  • Doubleclick on InitialKeyboardIndicators
  • In the small window you get you change the last 2 numbers from 48 to 50 and get 2147483650
  • Click on ok
  • Close the register window
  • Try again

I have been trying now for more than 10 times and it keeps coming up on time for the login screen no matter if it is a cold start or a restart... I hope it will last :-)

    As of 3/5/15 this is no longer effective - seems to have gone bad after latest MS 8.1 update.  A new "feature" perhaps?

    I have done this and still have to turn on numlock every time I turn on my laptop.

    I've been experiencing the same issue. I followed your instructions and I might only add that if as in my case there was NO "InitialKeyboardIndicators" you create one in the space of the Open Default and add the code #'s ending in '50' as instructed all at one time... It worked and I haven't lost it since. 4/29/ 2015. Thanks...I think I found a solution that works permanently:

    I found two youtube presentations on this.  \one said to change the string value to 2, the other said to change the last two digits of the string from 48 to 50.  Neither works unless you only do a hot boot.  So now I hit the numlock key and then my pin.  Sometimes, but rare, the numlock was on and I turned it off.  So even that is not a 100% solution.  think \I will now research how to not log into my MS account at startup, like it was when I first bought the new computer.
