Windows 8 / 8.1 - Num Lock on startup screen

Hi,

When I start up my pc and get to the screen where I need to enter my password, sometimes the NumLock key is activated, sometimes it isn't. This is really random.

I have the same problem on 2 different pc's, one win 8 and the other win 8.1

I think I found a solution that works permanently:

It is also a change in the register but not the one I have read in most posts.

  • You go to the register
  • Open HKEY USERS
  • Open Default
  • Open Control Panel
  • Click on Keyboard
  • On the right side you get 4 keyboard items
  • InitialKeyboardIndicators has a number as data > 2147483648
  • Doubleclick on InitialKeyboardIndicators
  • In the small window you get you change the last 2 numbers from 48 to 50 and get 2147483650
  • Click on ok
  • Close the register window
  • Try again

I have been trying now for more than 10 times and it keeps coming up on time for the login screen no matter if it is a cold start or a restart... I hope it will last :-)

    You are completely right!

    But you should ask this to Microsoft (if you know a way how to do this).

    I already tried it using this forum, but apparently there's no direct link with Microsoft.

    But why should I have to do do that?!  And why has Microsoft not 'fixed' this?

    And no, I won't do it.  A slower start-up might take some seconds longer than the onesecond it takes for me to press num-lock.

    You have to disable fast startup. go to power options, click on "choose what the power button does", click on "change setting that are currently unavailable", scroll down to shutdown setting and uncheck the box next to  "Turn on fast startup"

    I tried your suggestion in regedit to change keyboard number sequence from ending in 48 to ending in 50 and clicked OK, but it didn't work.

    I have a Lenovo Ideacentre AIO 510-23ASR running Windows 8.1 Pro.  Is there another solution to leaving the numlock key ON?
