Windows 8 / 8.1 - Num Lock on startup screen

Hi,

When I start up my pc and get to the screen where I need to enter my password, sometimes the NumLock key is activated, sometimes it isn't. This is really random.

I have the same problem on 2 different pc's, one win 8 and the other win 8.1

I think I found a solution that works permanently:

It is also a change in the register but not the one I have read in most posts.

  • You go to the register
  • Open HKEY USERS
  • Open Default
  • Open Control Panel
  • Click on Keyboard
  • On the right side you get 4 keyboard items
  • InitialKeyboardIndicators has a number as data > 2147483648
  • Doubleclick on InitialKeyboardIndicators
  • In the small window you get you change the last 2 numbers from 48 to 50 and get 2147483650
  • Click on ok
  • Close the register window
  • Try again

I have been trying now for more than 10 times and it keeps coming up on time for the login screen no matter if it is a cold start or a restart... I hope it will last :-)

    Exactly the same problem - NumLock sometimes on on cold boot, sometimes not. Problem only began after upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1.

    Microsoft, please respond!

    I have had cold boots where the Numlock was on so this work around isn't really helpful.

    No answer from MS on this one, but it appears to be a pretty much universal problem. Nothing to do with the bios setting either, this is Windows messing with your num lock setting. A real issue if you log in with a pin rather than a password. I have no solution, but I do have a work-around:

    It may seem random, but in my experience it is not. On a cold boot the num lock is always off, so on a cold boot always press num lock on the lock screen to get to the password entry box. On a warm boot or if your PC is locked without a reboot num lock is always on, so hit key other than num lock (such as a 0-9 number key) in such situations to get from the lock screen to the password entry box.

    As always, ymmv. Hopefully this is an acceptable work around for you as it is clearly not on MS's radar.
