Windows 8.1 will not download from the Store

I think I have found a fix for this problem. We setup systems on a daily basis and part of this process is to upgrade systems to 8.1

We normally do 10 a day and 9 out of the 10 of these will experience this issue and normally we just leave them alone and at some random point it will work.

We wanted to try and find away of doing this without having to wait for a random point in time that it would allow us.

After following all the suggestions posted before we had not been able to find a consistent way to get it to work and between 5-7 out of 10 would still have the error message "Administrator privileges"

If we follow the following procedure it works every time! We have no idea why or how this would work but we don't have this problem anymore.

1. Make sure all windows updates are done.
2. Go to the windows search and type "Computer".
3. Right click and select properties so that it brings up the system properties window.
4. Close this properties window and go back to the store.
5. Select the upgrade to windows 8.1 from the store.
6. It should then download the update.

I hope this solves the issue for you as it has done for us!

I also cannot believe Microsoft are allowed/able/happy to tell such poor products - and to not even repspond on a thread like this is shocking!!!

I wonder how quick microsoft would 'respond' if someone were to start posting abuse towards them on here???

I think if I were to compile a list of worst companies to deal with as a customer, they would be very near the top of my list - if not at the top!!!

I experienced exactly the same issue, once all Windows 8 updates in place, 8.1 became visible in store but download would not recognise that I had an administrators account - this was the one set up when the laptop was first configured. Created a new admin account on the laptop and download and upgrade worked fine although it took a stupid amount of time circa 2 hours from start to finish. Interesting the original admin account did not log on cleanly after the upgrade so I suspect that the setup of the original account when the laptop was configured had not worked properly and whilst it looked like an admin account it had issues - deleted that account, with difficulty, and recreated it from scratch - working OK now. All a bit frustrating, like Window 8.1 now I have it running but getting from factory installed 8 to 8.1 was tortuous, and would be beyond most people (I am an IT director and don't give up easily but ordinary folk like my mother would have no chance - a poor microsoft effort!!!)

Hello. I know that it I 2014 but if anyone is still having this problem you can do something very simple. I had the same problem and all you have to do is change it over to your local account.

You can do this by taking the following steps:

1. Go to the settings bar and click Settings.
2. Then go to Change PC Settings that is located at the bottom of the bar.
3. Then click Users.
4. Then click Switch to Local User.
5. This will then prompt you to create a local user, which is yourself, which will give you the privileges you need to download Windows 8.1 with no addition problems.

If this continues to say you need permission, then I suggest you look at your account settings in the control panel and make sure that you are the only person on the account.
