"Your computer is low on memory" when its clearly not

This problem started when i upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1

When i run a game, for example, Arma3 randomly throughout my game i'll be thrown back to windows desktop and presented with a message saying "Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs: 'Game name here'"

As you can see from the above screenshot i have 2.6gb in use and 5.3 free, so why does it think its out of memory?

I have set my pagefile from "system managed" to 16gb initial - 24gb max

This made no difference whatsoever..

My hardware has not changed, Like i said i noticed this almost instantly after upgrading to 8.1

Any help would be appreciated because as far as i'm aware theres no way to revert back to 8 from 8.1?

Thanks Adriaan - I have changed the registry setting and rebooting seems to help.

Seriously, when I thought windows 8 couldn't get any more s**t. How about you (Microsuck) do your job and fix this issue or at least give us a glimmer of hope by replying. This message box is crashing most of the games I am playing. I never thought I would say this, but Apple is becoming increasingly enticing to me as my next computer. F*** you Microsoft

I am looking at getting the new Asus Rog GX500 looks amazing! great specs... but the thought of windows on this is worrying :o I never used to be hesitant but this error has been going on a While to say the least. and Microsoft want to "focus more on PC games"... well Please do.

So for those intrested ive found a solution.

The problem is in the newer version of direct x that is shipped with windows8.1.

Due to some kind of bug it floods the system commit making your computer throw those errors.

a fix for this problem is to use a graphics driver prior to windows8.1 so that it doesnt support the latest version of directx making windows 8.1 unable to force the latest version.

In my case since i have 2 graphics cards(intel hd4000 integrated graphics and a dedicated nvidia one).

it'll do to install an older prior to windows 8.1 driver for the intel hd4000.

im using version 9.17.10.2875 and its working fine now. just dont forget to disable automatic driver updating or windows will keep reinstalling the latest driver.

if youve got a newer intell hd integrated graphics card then i guess youre out of luck for now.

Reposting this solution in the hope it helps some people.

note that the problem lies with the latest directx version which windows 8.1 ships with and forces programs to use this version. This solution is a workaround to make windows 8.1 unable to force the latest version of direct x.

there may be other ways to do this but the above one works for me

Skyrim has become unplayable for me, as this error keeps happening over and over. I'm now playing Dragon Age, and although I'm not getting that specific error with this game, it does keep minimizing to the desktop every few minutes. I have tried every single fix and work-around I've found and nothing, has helped. Bosom of Microsoft indeed...I've come very close to actually saying 'f*** you Microsoft" and switching to mac. I guess what makes me angriest is Microsoft's callous disregard of its base. There has been no help in this forum except a copy pasta at the beginning. Grrr.
