Windows update successfully installs KB2802618 repeatedly

Windows Update continually installs KB2802618.

I have downloaded the update manually and run it - several times - and each time it says it was successful; it then does not appear in updates.

I have run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and after asking for Admin permissions, the troubleshooter "Fixed" issues.

Still no joy.

Issues

  • DISM /cleanup-image returns that the option is unknown
  • The Installed Updates list is empty
  • (therefore) it is not possible to uninstall and re-install updates

Solutions attempted:

  • wsreset
  • Windows UPdate Troubleshooter and Cleanup Tool
  • Rename of cabroot2 and SoftwareDistribution [post]
  • Confirmed user group similar memberships between Windows 8 devices (one working, one not)
  • Using Powershell for /cleanup-image [post]
  • Checking registry entry permissions between Windows 8 devices
  • Working one-by-one through the Updates to see if I can see a pattern, or supply a list at least

CONCLUSION

Manual repair was NOT successful.  After exhausting MANY MANY routes, including one-by-one installs, found to be down to the Software Protection Service not wanting to start - at all.  This was NOT fixed by a "Refresh" within Windows 8, nor was it fixed by off-line SFC or by DISM /cleanup (when I eventually got it to work).

Solution was to burn a Windows 8 DVD, run Setup, and then run an installation and remove ALL applications, leaving only User Data (second option).

After this, all updates installed correctly, and no software I have installed subsequently has brought the problem back.

    I can't guarantee this will work for anyone else, but I just re-installed Windows 8.0 Pro over the current installation.  When it completed, KB2871389 was showing in available updates.  Windows 8.1 upgrade showed in the Windows Store, I installed it, and now I am running Windows 8.1 Pro

    Can you be explicit: did you Refresh the PC using the Refresh tools, or did you completely Re-install, ie wipe and start again?

    I have tried a Refresh previously, and after installing a set of the updates, no other updates would install after that.

    I then did an uninstall of all the updates, with some that wouldn't uninstall, and still I couldn't install any security updates.

    A System Restore later still didn't help.

    I am now doing a Refresh AGAIN.

    I prefer to wait any real solution for this thread instead of reinstall all the system.

    Anyway 5 days and still no solution...

    As noted, I'm doing a Refresh AGAIN now - which is kinda prettier than a re-install   I'll post when I have repeatable results.

    Digging around after exploding the msu and internal cab files of this update, I found that it's looking for a specific registry key to be updated after the TxrLogCleanup.exe has run.

     

    Attached to these configuration xmls is assembly identities looking for versions: 6.2.9200.16666 or 6.2.9200.20774. The version of the TxrLogCleanup.exe supplied in the msu is 6.2.9200.20620.

     

    Can this be why it is failing to update properly and saying that the image is invalid? I did find that I could "spoof" they system into thinking this update was installed by updating the regkey in the xml (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Kernel\TxrLogCleanupDone ) to 1 and then Windows Update thinks it's installed but then trying to install the next KB (that would bring me to getting Windows 8.1 and is a bit more complex than this one to dig through), it doesn't recognize the KB... of course.

     

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Help?

    I'm having the same problem here, and now I know that's why I can't upgrade to Windows 8.1

    Indeedly - in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8\_1-windows\_install/windows-81-does-not-appear-in-windows-8/3157f850-2bfe-4b11-a9b6-429bdd460c01 (my other thread!) the Moderator has confirmed that there s a specific update that needs to be installed in order for the Store to find the 8.1 update.

    Whatever happened to Service Packs??!  Feels like we're back to the good old days of NT 4.0 SP7.

    I wanted to download 8.1 iso using http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only. Unfortunatly my win8 key is not working for win8.1...

    If no solution i'll be forced to test that :(
