Windows Update continually installs KB2802618. I have downloaded the update manually and run it - several times - and each time it says it was successful; it then does not appear in updates. I have run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and after asking for Admin permissions, the troubleshooter "Fixed" issues. Still no joy. This was NOT fixed by a "Refresh" within Windows 8, nor was it fixed by off-line SFC or by DISM /cleanup (when I eventually got it to work). Solution was to burn a Windows 8 DVD, run Setup, and then run an installation and remove ALL applications, leaving only User Data (second option). After this, all updates installed correctly, and no software I have installed subsequently has brought the problem back.

My option would be to recover to windows 7, which is on a recover partition. Then upgrade to 8.0, for which I have the key Then hope for the update to 8.1 works. I think I'll wait.

I booted the Windows 8.0 operating system. From Windows, I put in the Windows 8.0 DVD and ran setup again. Once the Windows 8.0 setup completed, it had many updates to complete. One of them was KB2871389 and I was hoping for the best. When all the updates completed, Windows 8.1 upgrade was right in the Windows Store as it should have been. I started the upgrade, which appears to hang at times, but don't give up. Let it complete and you should have Windows 8.1. I understand some of you want to wait for an official fix, but I had already waited long enough. How much time have you put into finding a solution? You could put the time into reinstalling over the current install or wait some more. It's your choice, but I wasn't getting anywhere by waiting so I chose this option which worked for me. I hope it works for others too.

ok. When i bought Windows 8 Pro, I chose the option to download the ISO and burn my DVD. I think everyone has that option, but perhaps that option is no longer available.
