I booted the Windows 8.0 operating system. From Windows, I put in the Windows 8.0 DVD and ran setup again. Once the Windows 8.0 setup completed, it had many updates to complete. One of them was KB2871389 and I was hoping for the best. When all the updates completed, Windows 8.1 upgrade was right in the Windows Store as it should have been. I started the upgrade, which appears to hang at times, but don't give up. Let it complete and you should have Windows 8.1.
I understand some of you want to wait for an official fix, but I had already waited long enough. How much time have you put into finding a solution? You could put the time into reinstalling over the current install or wait some more. It's your choice, but I wasn't getting anywhere by waiting so I chose this option which worked for me.
I hope it works for others too.
