Getting error code 0x800701E3 when copying files from laptop to external hard disk

Original title: error 0x800701E3

I have this WD ext hard drive 300 gb for pat 3 years. recently I am getting the above error message whenever I try to copy or send files from laptop to external hard drive. I tried different USB ports on laptop with same error message coming up. I ran chkdsk from laptop on the external drive but the problem persists. I backed up the files from the ext hard drive and formatted the drive. but no success. any suggestions to rectify the problem? thanks

Hi Mirle,

What was the exact scan report that was generated after you ran the ‘Error check’?

Did it provide you an option to delete the files that couldn’t be recovered?

It appears that Windows has tried to recover some of the files in the bad sectors. If they are corrupt and beyond repair, then Windows might fail to open the file or delete it. If you are unable to delete these files, then you can copy the other files to a different location, format the external drive completely to remove all corrupt files, and then copy the other files back to the External hard drive. Right click on the External hard drive in File Explorer and select ‘format’ to format the drive.

    Scott,

    I have 2 mins WiFi connection.

    Do not let the computer sleep while it is making an image.  If it does then it is supposed to continue when it wakes up without any help from you but I would not trust any such image.  I would start again.

    Screensaver does not harm anything - it just interrupts the instructions to the monitor screen.

    Nothing continues in the background while sleeping.

    Yes, images can be copied to other drives for storage & for restoring form.  the key point is that you must  not change anything within the image folder itself - copy the whole thing unaltered.  I have always shuffled them about and have never had a problem.

    Here's how you solve this issue.  Buy a plane ticket (or drive if close enough) to Redmond, WA and go to Microsoft headquarters.  Walk in to the software developers area and slap the stupid out of them.  Repeat for the programmer's area.  Perhaps if enough people do so, they will come to the understanding that screwing up is neither funny or productive. 

    To transfer the files though, since Microsoft obviously doesn't know what they are doing, you could put a Ubuntu installation on a Flash Drive and use the "Try" option.  Then you should be able to copy/move the file from your current device to an external one.

    Same 0x800701E3 when trying to use windows system image backup and external drive.

    Formatted the drive. Copying and using data on it works without issue. Chkdsk ok.  Can not use windows system image backup with this external drive.

    To anyone with the same error/problem

    So my Seagate 1TB hardrive gave me the same problem and when I was searching or solutions most of them said I had to format my hardrive, which was not an option in my case.

    Instead I tried running my hardrive on a different laptop/pc and it worked! So in my case it was my own laptop giving me the problem.

    Thus if you don't want to format your hardrive and save your files, I suggest copying everything on a diferent pc, format the hardrive, copy everything back and backup your hardrive.
