Getting error code 0x800701E3 when copying files from laptop to external hard disk

If SFC would not resolve the issue then why recommend running it ??

Ok so this issue has gotten worse, below I pasted the reply from WD on the error, since I formatted the xhdd to test the fix for the laptop I wanted to check to be sure that it would still run on the desktop again, when it completed deleted the previous image copy, not realizing that the newest one was empty, now when run the image on the desktop get the same error. Checking a different port to chck..So now the error is the same on both and do not have a system image for either pc...

So really don't know what else to do from here even a new xhdd was the same error, but was the same manufacturer of the xhdd, I did see that the windows back up function includes a system image along with files so going to see if that will run and if did then confirm for me that it is what I would need in a full recovery. Worth a shot.

One question in the system image on the desktop there is a partioned drive called the HP recovery should this be include in the system image, I have included but not sure if I did the first time when it did complete. To be honest I also thought that there was one on the laptop and if was, was gone now since the win 10 update....

I sincerely apologize for any confusion. I've done research about the error number you are receiving "0X800701E3" and I've found  this information which may help you solve the issue since it describes the possible reasons of the issue and possible solutions:

Introduction:

Error codes often state what has going wrong under the hood of the computer hardware. Ignoring error messages isn’t advisable, especially if it’s a serious error message that might be informing the user about a serious issue. And if not taken care of, such issues can cause huge losses. So it’s important to have a basic idea about the error messages as well as the codes associated with them. Why does this error occur?

This error is caused by hardware failure if Input / Output operations fail while transferring a file from one location to another. The error message will basically state that the operation cannot be completed due to a hardware error.

Most of the times the only way out of a hardware failure is to replace the faulty hard drive. However, there is no harm in trying out the following solutions as sometimes they do prove helpful in solving this error.

Solution 1

Before purchasing a new hard drive, a couple of tweaks can be tried out as they do work sometimes. Microsoft Windows provides the CHKDSK command to identify and fix errors in hard drives. CHKDSK stands for Check Disk and it’s the standard way to fix hard drive errors in the Windows platform since Windows XP.

1. Open the start menu
2. Type CMD
3. When it returns the search, find “Command Prompt”, which has a black icon. Choose to run it in admin mode by (Right click -> Run as Administrator)
4. Type the following command and press ENTER

• CHKDSK /f DRIVELETTER:

As an example if you want to check the D drive for errors, type the following

Solution 2

The following error message pops up when Windows is being installed. In this case the only way out is to install Windows on a different partition.

Solution 3

If the previous two solutions did not work, the best way to deal with this error will be to to buy a new hard drive as it’s not possible to fix the I/O (Input / Output) errors just with the software. Although it still might be possible to fix the hard drive by sending it to a hardware technician, but that is something beyond this article’s scope.

Ok, so went to run the backup and it backing up the files from Windows 7,,not win 10 ?? Cked the inet and around could not find a way to change wht ti backup..So tell you I am at my wits end here..Same problems and no resolution..frustrating aalmost to the pint call it quits and just worry and keep my oen files backed up and if it crashes it crashes..THIS IS WHY I LIKE MY CHROMEBOOK SO MUCH !! None of these problems till go to Win 10. !!

So tell me what did I MISS to just run the backups without the win 7 data ??

I have seen your C++ thread.  One of the possible causes was a display driver problem as I recall.  I read all your recent threads to give me a better feel for the situation.  It was after having looked at them all that I recommended a clean install in File structure corrupt after win 10 upgrade

I suggested running SFC when you did not know if it was a Windows issue or a WD xHDD issue.  I said at the time that I had never seen SFC achieve anything useful but that it seemed to be appropriate given the observed symptoms at that time.  I was not at all surprised that it did not find any faults.

If you have reformatted both xHDDs [to NTFS, I assume] then you should at the very least be able to copy files onto them [even if Windows cannot save a system image onto them]. 

The alternative system image making software I told you about would probably be able to make system images onto the xHDDs despite Windows' inability to do so.

Partitions such as HP recovery do not need to be included in the system image. 

• There is no point in doing so because their recovery procedure would attempt to return the computer to the condition it was in when it left the factory [Windows 7, I assume, and most but not necessarily all of the bundled applications] and would overwrite all of your own files in the process because the whole of the internal HDD would be rewritten.
• There is no telling if the HP Recovery partition would even work now and it might well just be wasted HDD space.
• You could try searching the HP website & their user forums to find out if it would still work.  Only HP or an HP user could answer this question because these special recovery partitions are completely outside Windows, they are set up by the OEM and there is no common method for doing so.
• HP might have changed how they provided a means of recovering their computers between the time you bought the desktop & the time you bought the laptop for all I know.  Perhaps they provided a Windows 7 reinstallation DVD instead of a recovery partition for the laptop.

About "I did see that the windows back up function includes a system image along with files", Windows uses the same system image tool however it is started so the results will be exactly the same as when you tried to make a system image on its own.

About your email from WD, I think it does not tell you anything.  I think you have already searched the forum for advice on the subject.  You might try searching for something like system image error on WD external drive [leaving off the error code itself from the search but including WD].  I don't know if searching the WD website & their user forums, if any, might yield additional guidance.  I just have the nagging feeling that I have seen other WD users report problems in the past.

About "backing up the files from Windows 7,,not win 10", "what did I miss", you did not miss anything.  The name of the backup utility on Windows 10 is Backup & restore (Windows 7).  It backs up what you have, which is Windows 10. 

• This utility was added in very late in the development period and it seems to be a straightforward copy of the corresponding Windows 7 utility.
• I would hazard the guess that they were trying to create a brand new utility but ran out of budget so just copied the old one across.
• They probably added (Windows 7) to the name so they would not get their records mixed up - they had probably given the abandoned Windows 10 equivalent Backup & restore so just needed something a bit different.

About "So really don't know what else to do from here", I think a reinstallation would be worthwhile.  It would also set you up with a stable system for years to come.  I have just finished doing this on both my computers.  I posted my advice about this on your other thread.  File structure corrupt after win 10 upgrade

Now I have to pack.  I will probably not be back in the forum until Monday week.  I will try to make the time to look in here briefly tomorrow though.

Thanks for taking the time to reply...I am not quite ready to reinstall same issue woth xhdd is on both pc's now...and now new issues have arrived on the desktop..all others have been on laptop.....Want to work on and try some things this week..I will update you on results....Enjoy the week !!!

About ready to just hit the restore button back to win 7 !!!

Shot in the dark....This may sound ridiculous but gotta ask..during the back up and /or system image when running is it ok if the pc goes into screen saver mode and even sleep mode ?? In all cases as this has been running and the error occurred, my assumption is it is ok and would run in the background ??

Can the backups/system image files be copied to another xhdd and still be used or do they have to stay in the drive that they originally were made on ????
