Getting error code 0x800701E3 when copying files from laptop to external hard disk

I have this WD ext hard drive 300 gb for pat 3 years. recently I am getting the above error message whenever I try to copy or send files from laptop to external hard drive. I tried different USB ports on laptop with same error message coming up. I ran chkdsk from laptop on the external drive but the problem persists. I backed up the files from the ext hard drive and formatted the drive. but no success. any suggestions to rectify the problem? thanks

Hi Mirle,

What was the exact scan report that was generated after you ran the ‘Error check’?

Did it provide you an option to delete the files that couldn’t be recovered?

It appears that Windows has tried to recover some of the files in the bad sectors. If they are corrupt and beyond repair, then Windows might fail to open the file or delete it. If you are unable to delete these files, then you can copy the other files to a different location, format the external drive completely to remove all corrupt files, and then copy the other files back to the External hard drive. Right click on the External hard drive in File Explorer and select ‘format’ to format the drive.

    I have emailed Western Digital for assistance after checking the site for this error. Nothing found, so will wait to hear back from them..I am guessing that it may be a firmware update that will tell me to do, but since worked on the desktop I would be reluctant to do that because on their site there are posts to issues people are having with the firmware updates.

    Read the doco on SFC to your link going to back up files first then run, post back after runs..Doco says may need to run more than once ??! I assume run DISM as well ?? As doco states. If I don't get to this today..may be Thursday want to get files backed up first before run.

    I'm sorry, I am out of ideas.  But system images are such an important thing - armed with a recent system image & an installation disk [USB/DVD] to boot from, you can cope with most problems.

    I would not expect this to be a malware-related problem.

    There is one step that is about as overused as "turn it off then turn it back on again".  But it would be worth checking at this stage since the problem is a Windows one not an xHDD problem:-

    Run SFC

    1  Open an "elevated" ["Admin"] command prompt - right-click on the Start button & select it there.

    2  Type this then press the Return/Enter key

    SFC /scannow

    3  Make a pot of tea while you let it run [20 minutes is typical].

    4  When it finishes, it will report that "Windows resource protection" did not find any faults / found some & fixed them / found some but could not fix them.  If you let me know the result I can comment.  There is a guide in the forum "Wiki" article SFC and DISM - ZigZag WiKi.

    Well still same error..So error check drives reformatted the external drive, tried other usb connections and still getting the same error, crashes bout 3/4 way through run.. Know that it works since completed on other pc..Know that I can copy large amounts of data tothe pc with no errors, but some reason just does not like the system image copy. Denis,Anybody any other suggestions  ?? Next guess will be do system image copy on another disk or another flash drive, looked at the good copies 54 gb, a lot of disks (11) and don't have another ext drive big enough to handle this much...so if can't fix, system image is a no go  and take a chance never need it...WELCOME TO WIN 10 !!

    Just a thought by chance would anti virus or malware software cause this ..Probably not cause this error is a hardware error !!

    Any other suggestions ????

    This is the best explanation I have seen about the subject What is the difference between NTFS and FAT32.

    Windows 10 cannot make a system image onto an external drive that is FAT32.  Windows system images actually contain several separate files and some of them can be as big as 8GB.

    I have just tried using a FAT32 drive for a Windows 10 system image and it refuses to run.  I ran the test on a 64 bit computer & on a 32 bit computer with the same result.  However, I do not think that is the cause of the current problem because it gives a clear explanation for the failure to proceed -

    I think the fact that the Desktop made an image onto the external drive proves that the drive is sound & that it is already formatted to NTFS.  But, providing you save the files on it somewhere else, reformatting it will do no harm.

    The external drive will work on both your Windows computers whether you choose NTFS or FAT32.  It is just the system image constraint that forces you to choose NTFS.
