Getting error code 0x800701E3 when copying files from laptop to external hard disk

Original title: error 0x800701E3

I have this WD ext hard drive 300 gb for pat 3 years. recently I am getting the above error message whenever I try to copy or send files from laptop to external hard drive. I tried different USB ports on laptop with same error message coming up. I ran chkdsk from laptop on the external drive but the problem persists. I backed up the files from the ext hard drive and formatted the drive. but no success. any suggestions to rectify the problem? thanks

Hi Mirle,

What was the exact scan report that was generated after you ran the ‘Error check’?

Did it provide you an option to delete the files that couldn’t be recovered?

It appears that Windows has tried to recover some of the files in the bad sectors. If they are corrupt and beyond repair, then Windows might fail to open the file or delete it. If you are unable to delete these files, then you can copy the other files to a different location, format the external drive completely to remove all corrupt files, and then copy the other files back to the External hard drive. Right click on the External hard drive in File Explorer and select ‘format’ to format the drive.

    Well seems to be a common problem..Having the same issue with my 1tb WD external drive..Works fine on my desktop but same error on my laptop..since I did the win 10 upgrade trying to run a system image. Copying files seem ok.. Before I go to  earlier fix, reformat the external drive, I would like to run your fix..but need assistance on accessing the scan and repair tool ?? Where is it located ??search did not locate and couldn't find in the control panel.

Hace poco estoy recibiendo el mensaje de error anterior siempre que intente copiar o enviar archivos desde la computadora portátil en el disco duro externo. Probé diferentes puertos USB en la computadora portátil con el mismo mensaje de error viene. Corrí chkdsk de la computadora portátil en la unidad externa, pero el problema persiste. I copia de seguridad de los archivos del disco duro ext y formateado la unidad. pero sin éxito. alguna sugerencia para solucionar el problema? Gracias

    Hello JeanetteHarlow, thanks for conscice explanation and to tell you that I have the same exact problem except I can not back up anything and my laptop is an old Acer Aspire 2009 full to brim and my passport is one terra(I am not sure about the spelling) and I also have disk 100% problem ; Unfortunately no one has been able to help me I have even gone to Answer Desk and they were kind enough to look into it by entering my laptop but to no avail. But , hey do not loose hope , do not despair I am sure someone soon will come up with an answer. Adios Amigos .

    I also have a WD Passport Ultra, and am suddenly regularly getting error code 0x800701E3 when transferring large amounts of files from my laptop to my external drive.  

    I also run into the problem where I can not delete files, and every time I do an scan on my external, it comes up with no errors.  

    I have also noticed that sometimes when trying to copy/delete files and scan for errors, I get carryover issues into my general laptop performance.  Most, if not all of my programs currently being used freeze up, and I have to do a hard shutdown and restart

    My drivers are up to date.  I am using Windows 10.

    I am bypassing the error by only transferring 10 files at a time, and then disconnecting my external and reconnecting.   I shouldn't be needing to do this, and it is a waste of my time.

    I can't decipher the event viewer issues, and the links within the event viewer to understand the errors are useless - they take me to the general microsoft website, or the link takes me to a page that is no longer accessible.

    Anyone else suffering this?  Or have tricks to fix it?
