Desktop icons move from main screen to extended screen monitor

Ummmm... no. I am one of many to whom this is happening, where it didn't happen before. One's icons need to be anchored to one's monitor 1. This is a WIndows' bug. Please, reproduce it and take care of it. This one is glaring.

This is a bug in windows and NEEDS to be fixed but has gone on for years.

Windows desktop management is just a complete buggy mess on dual-monitor environment. Changing icon sizes causes them to jump wildly and randomly without order between the two monitors, even though the primary monitors is NOT full.

Somebody at Microsoft needs to address this bug but nobody cares. What a joke.

so it seems this is just an annoying bug, that's not fixed for like decades? To me it happens only when I start a game in fullscreen mode, then all my icons from my main screen move to the other one. Come on M$, that's stuff that even MacOS and Linux can handle better for years. I won't even think about uninstalling/reinstalling stuff, because it's your fault, not mine. If only I could stop using software that only runs on crappy M$ **** OS (i.e. nearly all games, shame on Apple)

Apologies for necroing this thread even more, but it was one of the ones I found when searching for this issue so this is just a bit of information that might be useful to anyone else who stumbles upon it.

I'd seen variants of this problem before, normally when accidentally plugging monitors back into the wrong ports after a spring clean, but nothing as persistent as when I recently swapped an old DVI Samsung monitor for a new HDMI-only LG. No matter what solution I tried, even those that had helped in the past, most if not all of my free Desktop icons (the rest are hemmed in by Stardock Fences) would migrate to the secondary Iiyama monitor when resuming from sleep.

It turned out my problem was hardware. For years I've had one of those power strips that automatically powers down all the peripherals, including the monitors, when the PC goes to sleep. All of my previous monitor combinations have worked fine with this, waking up before the PC tries to enumerate them. But the new LG powers up into a sort of pseudo-sleep mode where I'm guessing it waits for a handshake on the HDMI port before fully activating. This gives just enough of a delay that the PC sees the Iiyama before the Samsung, assuming it to be the primary display and sending all the icons there before the LG becomes available. Sometimes the timing is bad enough that all of the icons end up on the second monitor, sometimes it's a borderline case and the icons end up split across the two Desktops.

The solution -- and I can't stress how much I hate this as a solution -- is to forego the energy-saving power strip and plug the LG straight into an always-on socket so that it becomes visible to the PC a few seconds earlier. Since doing this, I've not had my icons migrate.

I know modern screens are very energy efficient but surely nothing is as energy efficient as completely turning it off? Alas it seems I can no longer do that when putting the computer to sleep if I want my icons to stay where I left them. (I guess really hardcore tree-huggers would tell me to completely shut the PC down and not use sleep mode if I really want to save the planet, but there's a principle here.)

I guess the best solution in software would be for Windows to have an "always remember icon positions regardless of physical hardware" setting, but I understand what chaos that could lead to if someone's monitor died while all their important icons were locked to it. An option to override it and restore them with a keystroke would help here, but then there are third-party tools that do that already.

Bottom line: if you've tried all of the software- and settings-based solutions, go old-school and make sure your monitors are actually powering up sufficiently quickly to talk to the PC in the right order. In that regard the "solution" that worked for me is not a million miles from the one above where someone suggested keeping the secondary turned off until everything else has loaded. Of course if you want some icons on one screen and some on the other, that could also cause problems.

It does not solve the question because next time I turn on the computer the icons are back to the extended zone (second screen). Also, sometimes the icon bar (bottom of windows screen) also moves to the extended screen or it is duplicated there.

I want all my control icons and bar on the main screen only. Second screen is only for the results of my work.
