I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

    There are lots of errors there. I found a lot with the 1290 error but cant copy it so I'm going to input it manually, so hope I don't leave anything out.

    DCOM got error "%%1290" attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "in order to run the server" (4991D34B-80A1-83B6-332866B9097)

    Does the Fixit not work for you? It performs all those manual tasks automatically.

    Not having much luck are we.

    So it'll be necessary to rerun the following to correct the Service registration is missing or corrupt error.

    I know that because I had it myself.

    So do the following first of all.

    Go to Start, Run and copy/paste: regsvr32 qmgr.dll and click OK

    Do the same with this file: regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

    Reboot the system and then copy/paste this command into the Run field:

    %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf

    If you're prompted to insert the Windows installation CD, ignore that and in the dialog box at the bottom, change the path to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

    Restart the PC again and then go to Services and you should be able to see BITS in the list.

    The other errors you're seeing are related to BITS not functioning, so we have to sort that one out first.

    I copied and pasted the command into Run, and it opened up the Files Needed box, I clicked ok, another box came up with "copying files" and it's just hanging there.
