Error Code Ox80070057

I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

    2    Vipre Internet Security 2014 expires Feb 2014. No other spyware installed on advice from Vipre.

    3.   Yes, McCaffe on computer when bought.

    4.   As above, on computer but noy installed and removed.

    5.   Only one of the updates are shown and the Update for WindowsXP (KB971029) is not shown.

    Yes, it is shown,but when i go to Properties and click on Start, I get a message saying "Could not start BITS on Local Computer. Error 1290:  0x05a"

    I downloaedd the BITS update as you said, but got a message saying that i didn't need it as the version I had was newer. I still couldn't get it to work as when I entered the Reg add command, it came up with a black DOS box saying "ValueService DLL exists, overwrite y/n and what ever I enter, nothing happens.

    So what do I do now?

    Can you reboot please and then go into the Services menu and see if BITS is visible.

    According to the messages you're seeing, the file appears to be on your system already. Similarly, it's also registered.

    Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply - preferably without quoting my post:

    1a. When (approx. date) did you get the computer?

    1b. Was it a brand-new computer or a used computer when you got it?

    1. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
    2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?
    3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when it was brand-new? (Doesn't matter if it was never used or Activated.)
    4. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the Name option in the Sort by box on the right. Now scroll down & tell me if ALL of the following updates are listed?

       (a) KB2879017, KB2847311 & KB2883150; KB2876217 & KB2864063;

       (b) KB2859537; KB2797052, KB2780091 & KB2802968;

       (c) KB2758857 & KB2727528;

       (d) KB2393802 and especially Update for Windows XP (KB971029).

    1. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

    7a. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 7 Update 45 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

    7b. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.9.900.152 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORERONLY => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

    1. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?
