I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

Well, it didn't work last time, but I'm trying it again now. Will report back.
There are lots of errors there. I found a lot with the 1290 error but cant copy it so I'm going to input it manually, so hope I don't leave anything out.
DCOM got error "%%1290" attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "in order to run the server" (4991D34B-80A1-83B6-332866B9097)
Does the Fixit not work for you? It performs all those manual tasks automatically.
