Error Code Ox80070057

I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

    There are lots of errors there. I found a lot with the 1290 error but cant copy it so I'm going to input it manually, so hope I don't leave anything out.

    DCOM got error "%%1290" attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "in order to run the server" (4991D34B-80A1-83B6-332866B9097)

    The actual wording is

    Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local Computer.

    Error 1290: 0x50a

    Hi edzal,

    Could you go to Start, Run, copy/paste eventvwr.msc and click OK. This will take you to Event Viewer.

    Open the System menu and look for errors which are prefixed with a white cross inside a red circle.

    One or more of these will be related to the BITS problem you're experiencing.

    You need to double click each of these to read the contents. Find the error 1290 and then copy/paste the details here please.
