Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply - preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you get the computer?

1b. Was it a brand-new computer or a used computer when you got it?

2. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
3. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?
4. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when it was brand-new? (Doesn't matter if it was never used or Activated.)
5. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the Name option in the Sort by box on the right. Now scroll down & tell me if ALL of the following updates are listed?

   (a) KB2879017, KB2847311 & KB2883150; KB2876217 & KB2864063;

   (b) KB2859537; KB2797052, KB2780091 & KB2802968;

   (c) KB2758857 & KB2727528;

   (d) KB2393802 and especially Update for Windows XP (KB971029).

6. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

7a. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 7 Update 45 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

7b. Is Adobe Flash Player v11.9.900.152 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORERONLY => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

8. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?
9. Have you ever had occasion to do a Repair Install or a clean install of WinXP for any reason?

I downloaedd the BITS update as you said, but got a message saying that i didn't need it as the version I had was newer. I still couldn't get it to work as when I entered the Reg add command, it came up with a black DOS box saying "ValueService DLL exists, overwrite y/n and what ever I enter, nothing happens.

So what do I do now?

I have just tried to do the same on my Netbook which is also running XP Service Pack 3. I managed to get the updates to work, but they all failed. In your previous reply you said that qmgr.dll shwould be in 3 locations. On my netbook it is only shown in C:\Windows\system32 and it wouldn't copy the files from ServicePackFiles\i386 because the file isn't there. It's not that critical to have the updates on my netbook, but I would like to know why the files are not in their correct locations. I don't have a Windows CD as the Acer netbook came with the OS installed and a recovery programme on the hard drive. What is my best course of action to take to get updates working again.

What you'll have to do is to install the BITS update from here:

You have to validate before Microsoft will allow you to download the file which means you have to use Internet Explorer to download it with. You can however run the file immediately.

After the file installs, go to Start, Run and copy/paste: services.msc

Make sure Background Intelligent Transfer Service is visible in the menu.

Provided it is, double click it and then click the Start button. This is just a test to make sure it's working properly.

If you get Error 2: cannot find the file specified, copy/paste the following commmand into Run and click OK and then reboot.

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

I don't expect that to happen though.

I assume BITS should be set to Automatic mode?

The default is Manual. It was suggested to switch it to Automatic in an effort to facilitate downloads from the Windows Update site, but provide it starts when you click the Start button in Manual mode, then you should leave it at that setting.
