Error Code Ox80070057

I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

    Assuming an English-US language version of WinXP (x86)...

    ACTIONS:

    1. Download the installer for KB2888505, saving the download to your desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41074
    2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the task bar).
    3. Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above (i.e., IE8-WindowsXP-KB2888505-x86-ENU.exe) to install the update.
    4. Reboot twice.

    5, Test by opening IE8 (only!) to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com & running a CUSTOM scan.

    => If a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Software updates category on the left-hand side, install it to take full advantage of IE8's enhanced security.

    => Tip: With the sole exception of updates for MS Office, do NOT install any other Optional Software updates nor any Optional Hardware updates; just hide them, e.g., too.

    Now return to the main results window & install any remaining updates offered (e.g., KB2876331, KB2900986; KB2868626); follow all prompts.

    IE8. Yes, it is the same computer and I am having the same problem on my laptop and netbook, so it doesn't seem to be a problem at my end.. Incidentally, I have been running Firefox previously on my desktop, and Windows Updates has never been a problem downloading,. I changed to IE8 but it didn't make any difference.

    Hi ed...

    Please do the following:

    Go to Start, Run and copy/paste the following command and hit Enter: services.msc

    (if you don't have the Run command on the Start menu, hit Windows key + R)

    In the Services menu which opens, can you see: Background Intelligent Transfer Service ?
