BITS Error 1290: 0x50a following updates

Hi,

I'm looking for some assistance.

I'm running Microsoft XP Pro and have completed the critical updates, however now my BITS service will not start at all.

It is producing the error [Error 1290: 0x50a].

I've ran the Microsoft Updates fix utility and it is still unable to start it.

Any Help is greatly appreciated.

James

Hello.

Regarding this issue, it looks as follows:

a recent update for WIndows XP SP 3 seems to have accidentally added 2 flags into the BITS Service Registry entry which are, simply said, invalid there in that place on XP Clients.

The first key is "DelayedAutoStart".  According to MS this is valid from Vista and newer only, so -> remove that from a WIndows XP machine since it is not functioning.

The second key (and mostly our cause of 1290 0x50a error for BITS where it appears)

is the flag "SIDVersionType".

On WIndows XP this is invalid for the BITS service also. -> Remove it.

After that, Reboot Windows XP.

Regards

Bernd

I've a Dell (10Z4XD1) that I have re-loaded XP twice on last week - it's a work PC for one of our aviation

buildings which had a BSOD and needed fixed. I used a sp3 XP CD retail download modded OEM with nlite using the original product key. It installed/ activated just fine- after dropping in IE8, it found and installed about 140 updates.

.NET 3.5 sp1 was the first fail install noticed but it downloaded/ manual installed fine.

The ONLY reason I installed .NET framework was for the 'Mr. Fix-it' updater repair tool. I've since removed ALL .NET framework installs and BITS still refuses to start. Error 1290:0x50a.

This apparently breaks MSE (the installed AV) from updating also- the manager is taking this PC back today despite this obvious fail in its function.

Yes, we do have newer PCs with W7 but researching this has revealed that newer versions are having issues also- intolerable for a production environment.

Frustrate me once, your fault- twice, it's mine. Our IT guy uses Linux Mint, myself- Ubuntu. The only good is how it's slowly convincing our boss to give up on MS- which IS sad.

I don't know if this will work for everyone, but I fixed this problem on an XP machine by running this antivirus / antispyware cleanup application:

    http://www.combofix.org/download.php

My success rate with it is 100% without any issues after the restart. However, please read the warning below as I have heard that it can break things.

Warning: It's a freeware application and is very powerful. It has the capability to ruin your computer, so please use it with caution, and make sure you have a good backup before proceeding.

Did a restore point before October update, 5th I think. Bits is now working on both XP PC and W7 laptop which runs MSE which has had auto updates and has had one auto update KB            .Both now have switched off auto update for fear of returning to svchost.exe 99% and neither machines are 100% but they work untill Microsoft works out the problem.  The laptop now won't recognise passwords.  What next?
