BITS Error 1290: 0x50a following updates

Hi,

I'm looking for some assistance.

I'm running Microsoft XP Pro and have completed the critical updates, however now my BITS service will not start at all.

It is producing the error [Error 1290: 0x50a].

I've ran the Microsoft Updates fix utility and it is still unable to start it.

Any Help is greatly appreciated.

Hello.

Regarding this issue, it looks as follows:

a recent update for WIndows XP SP 3 seems to have accidentally added 2 flags into the BITS Service Registry entry which are, simply said, invalid there in that place on XP Clients.

The first key is "DelayedAutoStart".  According to MS this is valid from Vista and newer only, so -> remove that from a WIndows XP machine since it is not functioning.

The second key (and mostly our cause of 1290 0x50a error for BITS where it appears)

is the flag "SIDVersionType".

On WIndows XP this is invalid for the BITS service also. -> Remove it.

After that, Reboot Windows XP.

    It isn't me who has been reporting the issues with BITS.  What I have been doing is reading the reports of others with interest and responding and following with interest what solution works and having identified the common denominator, have already shared that information here and with Microsoft. 

    The issue with BITS is not without precedent so this is not a new issue which Microsoft must study.

    Microsoft can go on its own bug hunt and look for causes first with whatever caused a similar issue before. The history of the issue is something which Microsoft already knows in connection with the precedent cases and the precedent solutions for an old problem which has reappeared for a subsequent version of BITS for which the earlier more awkward command line solution is being applied and would be made simpler if the HOTFIX already requested is simply supplied.

    The person I have contact with isn't aware of any issues with BITS.  "Microsoft" doesn't know the problems you are seeing.  There's no official support cases opened.  "They" think everything is fine.  I hate to say this to everyone here in these forums, but forum posts are getting more noticed now, they don't always translate to Microsoft "knowing".

    Again please help.  I know that I'm asking a lot when you've done so much already, but please.

    Cleaning up a friend's computer.  Machine has a recovery partition and I created recovery discs.

    Cannot update Windows. There WAS NO BITS IN SERVICES. Followed error codes which led me to realize BITS was missing. Then followed directions from this site and got BITS back there but now I cannot START BITS. The error: is Error 1290: 0x50a.

    Windows XPMedia Center Edition V2002 Service Pack 3 on a COMPAQ Presario AMD Athalon 64 processor 3800+ / 986 MHz / 960mb ram / PAE

    I wanted to just uninstall SP3 but that is not an option in add/remove programs.  I have followed just about all of the posts in the string to no avail, BITS just wont start (same error code).

    Is this a case you might be interested in receiving emails regarding? 

    Am I reading about this BITS problem in Media Center? Or all?

    Hey Jose Antonio Ponton Posada.

    I've been around this microsoft self help deal for awhile and always respected your opinion highly. You and Davee. Prolly because you had the most valuable icon pictures.

    Anyway, I'm surprised you haven't nailed this BITS thing on the head yet.  Why is it so hard to get that back up and working? Your advice above doesn't do the trick, comrade.

    I really don't want to do a clean install again. Those are just plain tiresome.

    Tell me that is you in the picture.
