BITS Error 1290: 0x50a following updates

Hello.

Regarding this issue, it looks as follows:

a recent update for WIndows XP SP 3 seems to have accidentally added 2 flags into the BITS Service Registry entry which are, simply said, invalid there in that place on XP Clients.

The first key is "DelayedAutoStart".  According to MS this is valid from Vista and newer only, so -> remove that from a WIndows XP machine since it is not functioning.

The second key (and mostly our cause of 1290 0x50a error for BITS where it appears)

is the flag "SIDVersionType".

On WIndows XP this is invalid for the BITS service also. -> Remove it.

After that, Reboot Windows XP.

This was the final key to getting my XP desktop system up and running again after two days of memory clogging pain and abortive attempts and working my way through "Latest Windows XP Update and SVCHOST.EXE problems??" ,   'BITS' Not Listed Under 'Services' in Win XP " and finally this thread. Many thanks to all those who helped along the way especially, Xircal and Keith Jones_770 with their clear and patient explanations on the two former threads.

As someone said - you guys deserve a medal! :)

You need to have XP at SP3 with IE8 and the latest cumulative security update for internet explorer installed

Virusese do not come from Microsoft update.  Folks I have a working BITS here and not seeing what you guys are seeing.  Would someone here be willing to let me open a case and see what's REALLY going on here?  This feels like malware - not a bug in an update.

I am in Los Angeles . Hardrive crashed- reinstalled XP Media - Service pack 3 is installed and some updates installed too. However hundreds updates for XP and Office 2007 failed dozens of times -with error code 80246008.

Trying to downloaded that update- gave me the error code 1290:050a. Then I saw your note.

Following your instruction - I am unable to START  the Background BITS -clicking  on service status- it remains on STOPPED.  So I undid System32 .old and catroot.old - back to original.

I am not sure if I need to check in registry ? or config system to see if changes occured?

Anyway do you know or have a suggestion- what download I can do manually -so that I can receive updates that will NOT fail?
