Windows Store Broker problem: very high CPU usage

Starting several weeks ago (January 2014) the task Windows Store Broker (wshost.exe) starts randomly and quickly climbs up to 50-60% CPU usage - even if no "Metro" apps are running and I haven't opened the Windows Store. I can end the task in the Task Manager yet it starts again within minutes and begins using 50%of my CPU again. (See screenshot).

Full anti-virus scan reveals no problems.

Resetting the Windows Store (wsreset.exe) doesn't solve the issue.

I searched the Windows\WinSxS directory and found wshost.exe in 3 places. One of them was updated January 17, 2014. My guess is that this update caused the problem.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Anyone found a solution?

Is Microsoft aware of the issue and working on a solution?

My only resort for now is to disable the Windows Store via a registry entry to avoid my laptop continually overheating due to extremely high CPU usage.

I appreciate any help.

Kill Store and Store Broker from task list.

Rename the Cache folder to CacheOld at:

C:\Users(Your User Account)\AppData\Local\Packages\WinStore_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState

(Your WinStore_gobblygook might be a different bunch of gobbblygook)

Create an empty folder called Cache.

Solved! For me anyway.

Enjoy,

Ron

It may be necessary to show both Hidden, and System Files, and also to uncheck "Hide known file types" in Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View, to navigate to the mentioned AppData location.

Select Options.

Folder options should appear:

Click the View tab then select "Show hidden files, folders and drives"

Select OK.

Proceed to Appdata

I too am one of the Windows 8.1 users who all of a sudden cannot run STORE. The initial screen comes up with the rolling 'beads' and thats about it. I dont use STORE that much but on 3.23 I wanted to check for app updates by first going to the STORE.

I have had this Dell AMD A8 laptop since Dec. and things were fine till this happened. As with others, I noticed both STORE and STORE Broker running high CPU >45%. Have to close the app. Had the Answer Desk on the pc for couple of hours with no resolution. They ran the usual WSRESET and SCANOW or whatever its called. They also ran DISM(not sure) and that said things were repaired but it lied.

Ran APP Trouble shooter and it said to upgrade Video drivers. Probably because the settings for apps says NOT to auto download new drivers. I think this pc is set this way from Dell because drivers come from them.

    I have a Radeon HD 8510G video adapter -

For the Radeon 8510G HD driver – 13.250.31.0 – this level doesnt even show up on AMD sites for the Radeon adapter.

Have to call back to Answer Desk with my Case number when I have a couple of hours or more to watch them 'resolve' my problem.

Dont understand why one cannot reinstall the STORE component of WIN 8.

I guess that there is a bug here; I got this error when trying:

The file name(s) would be too long for  the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again.

That error followed by very long file names, which I cannot even rename. Great thinking Microsoft, guess teh store/tile architecture needs some fine tuning....

    Renaming the cache folder worked!

This has been discussed in another forum on the same issue. We have come to believe the Store or a Store app puts the overly-long file into the cache folder then when Store Broker touches the file it can't delete it and viola. Buggy McBug Bug.

Cut the folder and paste it into a high folder like C:\ or C:\Temp then delete it.

(Note - another user suggested this and I thought it was a clever way to deal with long folder/filename lengths.)

(One other clever option is to map a network drive to the containing folder then go to that folder and delete. Or go to CMD, Navigate to Containg folder and type SUBST X: . [notice the dot there] This will create an X: drive you can navigate to and delete the folder from there.)

(Lastly - navigate to the long filename and rename it to something far shorter.)

    Good luck

    Ron
