strange volume listed by disk defrag

Today when going into Disk Defrag, within windows 8.1, I see listed as the last disk a strange volume with now disk drive assigned. It has a lot of letters and numbers after it. It does not show up anywhere else on the computer. I have defrag many times before and this was not listed. No changes have been made to the computer except for the Windows 8.1 update. Any idea what this is and how to get rid of it in disk defrag. Oh, it also indicates that it is 25% fragmented but when you click to defrag, or whatever its called now in windows 8.1, it does nothing. All the other drives defrag correctly.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi,

These drives are related to the Windows recovery partitions (OEM). You don't have to worry about it and can leave the drive alone. It's better to have them rather then going ahead and reinstalling Windows to clean these partitions are preinstalled.

Hi,

This drive could be a recovery partition drive for the operating system on the computer.

To verify the issue better, let’s check if there are any unassigned drive under Disk Management. Follow the steps:

a)      Press Windows and R key together and type “diskmagmt.msc”. Hit Enter.

b)      Check if there are drive partition with unassigned drive letter.

Again, if there are any external devices/drives connected to the computer, disconnect them and check if it shows up.

To get a better picture of the issue, I would suggest you to post a screenshot of the window under Disk Defragmenter showing the drive. Follow the steps:

a)      First of all, take a screen shot of the issue and save it to location on the computer.

b)      Now, click on Add image on the answer website.

c)       Browse to the location and click on Upload Image.

Please get back to us with the required information in order to troubleshoot the issue further.

    I have the exact same situation going on, weird new volume and Defrag and Optimize ends immediately. We shouldn't expect much from these support forums, others on here have the same problem and the so-called experts just give the same generic advice that is time consuming and has nothing to do with the actual situation. I with these people, who must be getting paid to do this, would only give advice when they know it applies to our problems. Others are being told to reinstall windows and such things to no effect, as is typical on these forums.

    I know what it is you can find it in the Windows Registry under:

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3633204063-1869434021-143583576-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\CPC\Volume\

    Those are simply Network Drive or Share that at some point you connected on your computer.

    Those seem to be assigned dynamically so you can have more than one and there GUID (number) could change over the time.

    They should  not be enabled because they are not directly on your computers, they can be external device or connected to another computer... so it does not make sense that Windows what to defrag on it's own a network share if something happen the data could be lost on another computer than yours...

    Also on mine my SD card was included in the defrag job which is completely wrong since it shorten the life of the SD Card and also don't change anything in term of speed for SD card.

    If you don't want Network Share to be added in the future just untick the boxes here:

    Thanks Pinaki for getting back to me. here are two screen shots. One of the disk management screen and the other of the disk defrag screen. it looks like I have 4 unassigned drives in disk management but all look like they are recovery drives. Anyway, hope these screen shots help.
