Windows 8.1: WiFi dropping and/or "Limited"

Went to the Windows store yesterday to talk to a tech there. Hugely helpful. All I had to do was "flush the DNS." I don't know what that actually means, but here's how you do it.

1. go to Command Prompt (you can just search for it and it'll pop up)
2. type in "ipconfig /dnsflush" *note the space between config and /)
3. problem. fixed.

You should then also run Windows Update which you can get to by searching "wuapp." This helped me and I hope it helps you too. It never came up in any of my research.

If you are curious what is in the DNS cache use ipconfig /displaydns

If you continue to require flushing the DNS and you have third party anti-virus software I would consider changing  to Windows defender, the built in free one Microsoft provides, looking for an update to your current one or looking for a new one.

Basically the DNS is like a phonebook for IPs. You type in bing.com to the browser and it looks in a DNS server for an IP so your device can be routed to that IP.

Where you able to get this problem resolved? I have the exact same issue.

My experience with this is strictly with the connection dropping.

The box labeled ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device’ is unchecked. 

Current driver: 6.30.223.170; updating returns this is latest driver. 

Wireless Router: Apple Airport Extreme

I am the only user of the network & router; I live in a house, not an apartment.

My antivirus is Avast. 

Having problems with Wi-Fi dropouts. 

When my router Wi-Fi connection drops:

• The Broadcom listing in Device Manager has no errors.
• The Wi-Fi bars in the tray icon are white and shows five bars (indicating being connected).
• The Wi-Fi Network List shows as Connected.
• My iPad connects just fine.
• Power cycling the router itself results in a reconnection of the computer to the router Wi-Fi.
• The HP Network check gives responses like those above.
• I can print wirelessly from this Word file to the Envy wireless printer.

To reconnect, I can click ‘Disconnect’ from the Networks display and then ‘Connect’; it is good for perhaps a few hours; occasionally has held for a couple of days.  Just can't put my finger on what causes these intermittent drops. 

I am one of these frustrated users and tried every suggestion with no permanent fix.  I had a Linksys WRT320N Router for several years but felt I needed stronger Router so ordered a Linksys AC1600 Router and then I had trouble galore and no one could help even though it registered 'connect' with Linksys set-up, it would not work with windows laptop. (However it did work fine with Google Laptop.)  And I am handicapped and this presented a deep problem, I needed wireless.  Suddenly a "Windows" pop-up appeared on my desktop saying that there was a irreconcilable problem with Windows 8.1 but mentioned two other Windows which could be used, but I did not copy this.  I tried every advice given on-line and off line to no avail.  But I had bought a Linksys USB Adapter and I decided to try it in union with my Router.  Now, I have no problem as long as I use the two together.

I'm having this problem too, and ONLY with Win 8.1. My household has two iPads, a Mac and a Win 7 PC which stay on consistently, but the brand new Win 8.1 Toshiba Satellite has to be rebooted several times a day because nothing else will get it online. Troubleshooter can't find any problem.

I own my own business, so having the computer go offline and have to be shut down and rebooted several times a day is like having your assistant walk out of your office while you're in the middle of telling them what you need from them, and take a lengthy smoking break during which they forget everything you were telling them.

It's definitely a Win 8.1 problem. I'm hearing Win 10 is going to be better, so my guess is Microsoft won't fix this. Guess we're not paying them enough for that.
