Windows 8.1 Keeps freezing any help?

Hi All,

I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.

The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.

Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC...  the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....

It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner

Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.

Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.

One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.

None will try and fix anything but they should run.

    i had the same thing for 3 weeks on end and could only start same as you did several times a day, i found 3 partitions on my hard drive 80 gigabyte where everything on the computer was on, the third partition was filled with hp details of which referred to my computer as it is an hp laptop. the second partition was about nearly 900 gigabyte and had nothing on it so i merged the second partition with the first partition making it nearly 970 gigabyte  and have not froze once since i did it. what was happening was the first partition was nearly full and had only 6 gigabyte empty so can only think that was the cause.

    I think I might have solved the issue of windows 8.1 freezing on Lenovo y510p. I have the earlier version with NVidia GT 750M. After doing the changes, it has been almost 4 days since it has frozen and before that it was freezing almost every 5 mins.

    What I did was:

    1. Did a clean install of windows 8.1
    2. Installed all the drivers instead of the power management and NVidia graphic card drivers.
    3. Installed NVidia drivers from the nvidia website (my driver version is 9.18.13.3489).
    4. Did not install pokki.

    I currently do not have the power management driver installed so it shows one "unknown device" in the device manager but it is not causing any crashes or conflicts.

    There is a known issue of conflict between Samsung drivers and Windows 8.1.

    Known by both Samsung and Microsoft but not publicly admitted to anywhere.  There should be a whole support site and initiative dedicated to this.  

    I have gotten on with Samsung tech support twice and the second time they finally acknowledged this is a known issue.  The only recommendation given is that I should do a factory restore my laptop, go back to Window 8 and just never update again!

    This is outrageous.   Samsung and Microsoft need to:

    1. Publicly acknowledge and apologize for this issue.
    2. Set up a dedicated help site to keep all users affected about your joint progress in resolving.
    3. Proactively communicate to and support users who have been affected.

    When I contacted Samsung support #, they wanted me to send the laptop for "repairs" and then not have a laptop for an undefined and unknown period of time.

    But for those looking for a way out of this nightmare, but factory restore or clean install to go back to Windows 8 appears to be it.
