Windows 8.1 Keeps freezing any help?

Hi All,

I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.

The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.

Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC...  the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....

It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner

Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.

Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.

One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.

None will try and fix anything but they should run.

    Having exact problem described above including active mouse, clock icon on Action Center flag etc.

    Windows 8.1 pro was running without a problem from close to the release date until about three days ago.

    System started freezing within about 10 minutes from startup requiring a hard shutdown and restart.  Same sequence then continues. 

    Would appreciate some not too technical help please.

    I believe that my freezing problem may have been caused by a damaged Microsoft profile on my desktop computer running Windows 8.1

    I was about to give up when I remembered I also had a local admin account and my wife had a unused Microsoft admin account on the same computer.

    I logged on to the local admin account and the desktop never froze up.  I then logged into my wife's Microsoft account and again it did not freeze up.  I went back to the local admin account and deleted my Microsoft account profile, rebooted, and then re established my same Microsoft profile and the desktop did not freeze up.

    Unfortunately, this process seemed to cause another problem with the installed Office 365, however the Microsoft office help desk helped me resolve this problem, including a partial reinstall of Windows 8.1 Pro.

    I am not sure of the technical reason(s) for the original freezing problem, but the bottom line is the desktop has been working without a problem for the past two days.

    One additional question is, can you run two computers (desktop  and surface pro 2) at the same time using the same Microsoft account profile on each without corrupting the Microsoft profile on one or the other machine?

    I had the same freezing problem (SSD load 100%) with windows 7, 8 and 8.1. some times it go away when I re install windows. A few days ago I installed windows 8.1 twice and can´t solve the freezing problem until now.

    As many said the problem was SATA/AHCI/IDE but you don´t need to change ACHI to IDE or I don't.

    The hard drive works with any problems with AHCI mode.

    I solved the problem when I install new RAID drivers.

    My PC Configuration:

    AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

    ASrock 990FX Extreme 4 AM3+

    GeForce GTX 560Ti

    Kingston SSD 128GB SH100S3120G

    2x Kingston 2048 MBytes PC3-10700 + 2x OCZ 2048 MBytes OCZ3P1600EB2G

    @all:

    Dudes, the crappy secret is:

    The reason for random freezes is the IDE Mode for SATA Controllers in Windows 8.1 x64!!

    You will have to Change a subkey in the registry, after you´ve Chosen AHCI Mode in your BIOS for your SATA storage Controller.

    Otherwise you´ll have to do a clean install..
