Hi All,
I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.
The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.
Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC... the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....
It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner
Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.
Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.
One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.
None will try and fix anything but they should run.

This is keeps happening to me on 8.1 and I don't know why!
I used to use windows 7 ultimate and that worked fine. When my PC freezes to cursor sometimes disappears, the mouse and keyboard are no longer responsive.

This freezing problem with 8.1 software has been fixed so if you are still having the problem then it is other files, .dll's in some program or drivers that is causing the problem. Below is one of the easiest way to fix the computer.
HERE IS A REPEAT ALL IN ONE PLACE with a few other steps I did to be on safe side!
1.0 Install the following programs.
EaseUS Todo backup application -- http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm
Malwarebytes -- http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/lp4\_r/?gclid=CL2o9s\_Zg74CFWNo7AodcUAAjA
CCleaner -- https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Secunia PSI -- http://secunia.com/vulnerability\_scanning/personal/
Driver Update -- http://www.driverupdate.net
2.0 Run above programs in order listed.
3.0 If this does not fix the freezing problem this means you have something corrupted and more than likely you will never be able to find it. So you will need to install windows again by setting up dual booting. This way you will be able to use your computer as you take your time doing a Fresh install of Windows 8.1 and all your other software. This will take days so take your time and do it right.
4.0 Install by using Dual Booting -- http://www.howtogeek.com/187789/dual-booting-explained-how-you-can-have-multiple-operating-systems-on-your-computer/
5.0 -- If you don't have Windows 8.1 on disk or USB stick then you will need to make an install disk. This will bypass downloading from MS store after installing Windows 8. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/get-the-iso-you-need-to-create-your-own-windows-81-dvd/
6.0 After installing the new windows 8.1 make sure all windows updates have been installed. Wait a day then run Windows update again to insure all updates are installed. Then install Secunia PSI and Driver Updates. Make sure all drivers are up to date and Secunia says all your software is up to date.
7.0 Now start installing all your software programs using latest version from the manufactures website not from your disks and let the programs update itself.
8.0 Install/Run EaseUS and make a backup of your new install and only store it on a separate HDD or USB flash drive. Keep this backup up to date as things change on your computer. Now you will never have to go through the above again even if you buy a new computer just Clone this backup.
9.0 If you don't have a professional security suite then I would recommend OutPost Security Suite, one of the very best for many a year now.
This is what I have done to all my computers back in January and have not had any freezing problems since. Done same to several friends computer with same results.
