Windows 8.1 Keeps freezing any help?

Hi All,

I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.

The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.

Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC...  the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....

It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner

Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.

Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.

One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.

None will try and fix anything but they should run.

    Two - no, three - things you can try:

    1. Find the executable file for the game(s) you are running and right-click on it.  Select the Compatibility tab.  Set the compatibility mode to Windows 7.   Then try again.

    2)  In the worst case, uninstall W8.1P, and install Windows 7 instead.  Your games were probably written for Windows 7, not 8.1.  Certainly W8.1 can yield a slight increase in performance over W7, but it's usually only around 5%, not worth having if the alternative is freezes and crashes.  There will probably be further improvements (patches) coming out for W8.1 which will solve some of these problems, but it will take time.

    1. Have you turned off the appalling Fast Boot?  It's just hibernation by another name, it even uses the hibernation file.  It has caused me all sorts of problems even with clients' brand new machines, and as it is effectively worthless unless you have a real obsession with boot time, one of the first actions I take is to get rid of it.  You can disable it through Control Panel | Power Options | System Settings (just choose, say, "Choose what the power buttons do" on the left) | "Change settings that are currently unavailable".  Then do yourself and your SSD a favour and get rid of hiberfile.sys.  Open an admin command prompt, and type powercfg /H.  That will give you back potentially a serious amount of SSD memory.  hiberfile.sys should disappear from C:\ after that command is executed; check in File Manager with View Hidden Files enabled.

    All my drivers are up to date and I tried using 337.88 and 331.82 to correct the freezing. I ran 3D Mark and the Memtest86 or whatever its called and no errors. Yet when I play games after awhile my computer freezes no BSOD or anything I have to reset and the computer goes back to normal. I can watch Netflix, HBOGO or any internet and nothing it works fine. Games just lock up also if I pause the game for a few. Sometimes I get a few hours playing or half hour and I think its the same for pausing if not almost immediate. I am at a loss and hope someone can give me the answer. Thanks in advance for the help. This is my 10th build and never had problems till now that I spend more money then I should have. lol.
