Hi All,
I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.
The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.
Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC... the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....
It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner
Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.
Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.
One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.
None will try and fix anything but they should run.
Update to my comments from 1/12/2013
Ever since I updated all of the drivers and BIOS as mentioned in my previous comment I have not experienced the lock up problem anymore.
My machine now goes to sleep after some period of inactivity and wakes up with no problem once I touch the mouse or keyboard. Everything is working the same way it did pre 8.1 update and with Win 7 which I ran before for several years on the same hardware.
I would like to refer you to my post above of 18 January, which directs you to the information on how to get hold of a Windows 8.1 installation DVD.
I suggest that you use it to do a clean installation, and let the installation process and Windows Update provide the drivers for your PC. Then test to see if the freezes still occur. If they do, then OK, you have a problem, for which Microsoft is to blame. If they don't, get the latest drivers off your PC manufacturer's website, and cautiously install them, one by one. You could start with the graphics driver, which is probably the one most likely to cause trouble. If a particular driver causes trouble, use Device Manager to roll it back, and either use Microsoft's or find another one that doesn't.
I have done a clean installation of Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion dv7, and, apart from having had to disable hibernation (see my post of 22 November 2013), and having to use a novel technique to install the switchable graphics drivers, I have had no further problems.
DX11.2 is win8.1 exlusive - thats badass guirillia Marketing for a programmed Piece of ****. DX11.2 should enabled on win8 too! I think they can´t fix the Problem!! I´m writing threats here since dec13 ijn two languages because of random freezes. A lot of People told me it´s a third Party scanner/Firewall Problem! But it is´nt. A lot of People made clean installs!! Problem is still there - a lot of People can´t do clean install, because it was an update from 8.0. Stupid bullshit!! THX MS!!
And in comparing Apple (TM) you´re right. They´re trying and dreaming to be like apple - especially with Smartphones. But Apple (TM) is stable and perfect - low customisation possibilities but MS is on the same way now - but theý have´nt got own Systems. MS is dead if Win9 is bullshit like 8.1. The X-One is a flop too.. A PC yesteryesterday with NSA living room cam.
