Hi All,
I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.
The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.
Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC... the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....
It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner
Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.
Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.
One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.
None will try and fix anything but they should run.

Windows 8.1 freezes apart from the mouse cursor being still moveable, and some disc access still going on.
After pressing restart I checked the progress of files that were being created when the freeze happened. All of them ceased being updated at the moment of the freeze so I've no idea what the disk activity was all about.

Having same problems that others have described. Have tried various fix’s others have recommended on various websites that have not fixed the issue. I am starting to lean towards something with my video card. I am using XFX/AMD HD-4870 with the latest drivers from AMD website that does not make any difference. Motherboard MSI MS-7640.
Here is some things that I have noticed when it freezes.
I did not have any issue running Windows 8 Pro 64 this all started when I did a clean install Windows 8.1.
I installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64 on another computer with MSI MS-7577 motherboard and AMD Radeon HD-6570 display adapter. This computer work fine never has crashed or freezes.
On both computers I have “Start Menu 8” and several gadgets like All CPU Meter V4.7.3, Clock with second hand, Calender, and Weather.
When my computer freezes the All CPU Meter shows no activity, Clock second hand stops, with all other symptoms other have described. (FYI when you double click on blank space on All CPU Meter it will bring up the Task Menu.)
So I have found that I can double click repeatable it will finally load the Task Menu and program icons are grayed out. After sever minutes have gone by the computer will start working. It seems as if something is running in background that will not release control of computer until it finishes doing whatever it is doing.
I have set all my software to run in Compatable Mode that is not same as the other computer and that does not solve the problem. This is why I am starting to lean something wrong with Motherboard or Display Adapter. It appears that the Dsplay adapter software get in a loop and stays there until it is interupted by multi-clicking on All CPU Meter to bring up the Task Menu.
In the event log I have several Errors: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.
Maybe other can install the “All CPU Meter” and might be able to find something else that is above my pay grade.

It´s always the Desktop who freezes! And not the Metro. The Metro works when the Desktop feezes! I Win8 was fine, win8.1 update is ****..
I tried disabling Fast Start & Hibernation, but it made no difference.
I then uninstalled the last bit of software I installed before the problem began which was Adobe CC Tryout. Since doing that, instead of freezing my PC has started to give BSODs with the error "CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT".
Checked the BIOS and all settings are present and correct. The only thing else that has changed is installing Windows 8.1 update from the store and any pushed updates from Microsoft...
