Windows Update error 'Code 80246002'

Windows 7 Ultimate

I manually ran Windows Update and starting today it fails and provides an error  "Code 80246002"

I have seen (in here) recommendations to check for prior failed updates to resolve this...  I have no prior failed updates.

I've run both the Windows Update 'fixit' and  'WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab'

The fixit says it fixed several items, but failed to fix what it calls a windows update error, with this error code:  0x80070490

I can't find a solution so far... anybody have any suggestions?

    A lost (most) Windows Update issues are caused by corrupt or missing Update files/System Files. To get an understanding of what could be going wrong with your computer. Please follow the instructions Here to run the System Update Readiness Tool.

    Yes, in fact I ran it before the failure reoccurred, and followed up with a successful windows update check.

    Interesting... it cured itself again.  I am stumped...  erratic problems are extremely difficult to debug.

    In my case I got the window update error code 80246002 after I uninstalled KB2982791 as per https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-045 and then tried checking for updates.  Nothing I did would clear the error  (ipconfig /flushdns, renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder, a few MS Fix its, etc...).  Since KB2993651 was the replacement update that I was trying to download and install, I decided to manually download the update from the windows update catalog (http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=KB2993651).  After downloading and installing KB2993651, I rebooted the PC and then I was able to check for Windows Updates again without getting the 80246002 error code.

    Put me back onto the list.  Failed again with the same error code after working for a couple of days...

    Not happy...and NOT SATISFIED with MS support on this.
