How do I disable Automatic Update for Windows Update

I just bought a Surface RT, and updated to 8.1. My PC says it's set to automatically update, and it's not providing me with any obvious way to disable automatic updates.

Automatic updates for a computer's operating system have proven irritating and problematic for me in the past, and I would like to avoid that headache if at all possible.

Please for the love of God tell me I can disable automatic updates.

I have been reading a lot of posts on here...

Basically, Microsoft support will only post what there told to post.

This is how you turn Auto Updates on or off on Windows RT.

  1. Hit the Windows button.
  2. Type view local services and click it.
  3. Find Windows update and right click Startup Type.
  4. Go to Properties, you'll see Startup type again.

5. Click disable and apply.

Turn it on in the same way.

" I will bust my RT back to 8 "

    It's not really possible to install them out of order.  Most are cumulative and if you try to install one before the one that came before, it would cause a crash when the system tried to look for an updated file/DLL that doesn't exist yet.

    Really that's one of the 'strengths' of appliance-like devices like an RT tablet or iPad tablets.  Instead of countless variations (there's more ways to combine drivers/hardware/video cards/software/options than there are cataloged stars so far).  With devices like these, every single one that comes off the assembly line is a identical copy of all the others.  So unlike with all the devices around the world, the company that built it can test it and know that if the update works on one, it must work on the others because they're all perfect clones of each other.

    So .  what's the current behavior?  You reset, it installs updates, then immediately reboots and asks for your bitlocker key to unlock the drive?

    I honestly do not know what the problem is. I am back at square one right now on my unit. I dont know what update causes the problem as it does so many of them. When I put it back to a factory reset/ restore it has to install so many. That is why I want to disable my updates so I can pick one at a time to install and when it crashes I will know which one is causing the issue.

    Alright, so what is causing you to need to reset?  What's breaking?  Let's get it fixed so you get can out of this loop and on with your life.

    Like I said I have done both a reset, and a refresh multiple times. I end up doing the reset after a refresh does not work.
